Yes, I know it costs money to keep a site like this running but I'm sure it's nowhere near 5% of the total that passes through. Do any of JustGiving's profits go to charity or is someone rapidly becoming a "dot com millionaire" thanks to people who think they're donating to charity?
Take for example the guy who donated £50000 to the Richard Hammond/Yorkshire Air Ambulance campaign. By my calculation JustGiving got just over £3200 out of this! Surely no-one could claim the company did anything to deserve that much.

I'd propose either a capped commission, or a flat rate of, say, 50p per donation.

New page layout has problems
The new page layout has quite a few problems, and the original layout was much better at displaying all the relevant data.

First is the fact that the "My Story" frame, now only shows a subset of the text, and a user has to click "Read more" to read the full text. This is not obvious to all people, and leads to them not reading all the text I put on my page.

Secondly, the list of donors is now paged, and has too large a font. People who come to the page want to see who has donated and their comments easily, and the old layout provided this. The new layout requires them to page several times to see this info. This is important because if people see their friends donating decent amounts and comments then they are more likely to also donate a good amount, but if that info is hidden on page 4 then they will never really see it.

The new layout looks better and the photo feature is a great improvement, but I think the above problems need to be sorted quickly, with at least an option display all info on one page.

Cheers,
Menno
http://www.justgiving.com/menno/
Website problems

Is anyone else having problems with the JustGiving website?

I created my sponsorship pages 8 days ago. My page has been inaccessible to would-be sponsors for virtually the whole time (every single day, apart from one evening) due to so called 'essential monthly maintenance'. The feedback I'm getting from friends & sponsors is that if they do finally manage to access the page, actually making a donation is virtually impossible as they seem to end up in a loop. Loads of people have given up now. I keep emailing the 'help' email address but I haven't had any response.

I'm really losing my patience with the whole thing. They could be more open in showing year on year how much they have profitted as fixed costs form a smaller and smaller part of their income. Couldn't they also show how salaries and management benefits have increased year on year?

Non-profit alternative to justgiving

Hi everyone

Following the debate about justgiving fees (thread on this forum page): there's a new site called everyclick

I am not an employee, nor otherwise connected to everyclick

If you use everyclick (powered by Ask.com) as your search engine, or for online shopping, it will make donations (50% of ad revenue) to a charity of your choice.

Also you can launch appeals/sponsorship etc as on justgiving - except that the money is gathered and administered by the Charities Trust for a fee of 4.8% (including VAT and all card fees). This is significantly cheaper than justgiving, also any surplus is retained by the Charities Trust - itself a non-profit - for distribution across a range of UK charities.

Everyclick's site is a bit "clunky" at the moment, but will hopefully improve.

Any thoughts?

Taking old page names??

Hiya guys and girls,

I do all my fundraisers for Huntington's Disease and ideally the perfect justgiving name for someone raising money for HD would be www.justgiving.com/hd . I know it's only pety but this name is being taken by a guy who is'nt even using it. It's a complete waste of what would be a very good site name for someone like me. Seems such a shame to have good site names being wasted in this way. Is there any way to get that name?

That's available even to people who don't have credit cards, and it involves less hassle once you're on-line anyway. What do you reckon, could that be given as an option? I've actually watched people reach the "fill in the numbers" page, and decide they can't be bothered to go searching round the house for a credit card, they just stop at that point.

I've just been looking round your homepage and can't find anywhere that advertises the link to the forum service that you very kindly provide.

on a different point altogether, I've been looking through the postings re 5% admin fee. You provide a great service I'm not as clever with words as some of those folk, but you provide a service for those who want to raise money and also a place for those raising the money to chat about their chosen charity, provision of which comes at a price! If I had the idea, and couldn't patent it, I wouldn't like to just give it away! I know its not quite the point, but you do provide a service, and service costs.

Donna

Charity E-Cards with £2 for the receiver to choose a charity for - Boost revenue and charity contributions

Real friends spend £3 on a real card from Clintons' and send it by post. Quite a waste of money, paper and fuel required to get the card from A to B but it kinda means something due to the cost and effort.

Cheap people send E-Cards. People receiving E-Cards feel that the sender hasn't gone to much effort.

There must be some middle ground (and a way for justgiving to boost revenue and get more money flowing to charities, otherwise I wouldn't mention it on this forum :o).

So, here's my idea. Allow a user to buy E-Cards in "packs" of 10 for £2 each on the justgiving website. So, that's a transaction of £20 + gift aid. You can use a e-card reseller like americangreetings.com so you don't have to provide your own content. This is what Yahoo already does (http://www.yahoo.americangreetings.com).

Then, and here's the fun bit. When the user sends a card, the recipient gets to choose which charity the £2 goes to. Now, how much better is that than a naff normal e-card and a Clintons' waste-of-money paper card? Oh, and much better than paper charity (Christmas) cards where 10p goes to charity!

I think that justgiving.com is in a unique position to offer this service. You have a great number of charities signed up so a recipient will easily be able to pick a worthy cause that interests them. I also think that paid charity e-cards is a huge gap in the market and I'd love to see justgiving.com exploit it so that charities can benefit instead of Clintons this Christmas :o)

Thanks for listening.
(by the way, I'm an experienced IT manager and Java developer, I work for an Investment Bank in Canary Wharf)
Facebook application

Hi all, great site! If I give £100 to charity I can fill in a form, give it to the charity and the charity can use it to claim an additional £100 from my company. This has to be done, really. I can't overlook doubling the money. But it's a pain filling in a form and I'd imagine that it's a pain for the administrators at my company to process the forms too.

So, I know you guys are busy building your business in other ways, but I'm sure you can see the potential for JustGiving creating a corporate sponsorship section.

As a JustGiving member, I could specify that I belong to a company and, once the company representative has signed into the site and agreed this, I can automatically get my donations doubled. With this feature, it would be a complete no-brainer to use JustGiving for any charity donation whatsoever.

Implementing a high quality interface and Application Programmer Interface (API) would make it attractive to companies, because the company has the opportunity to reduce paperwork.

Just an idea. Anyway, keep up the good work.
