Dreaded 30th Birthday

To ease the transition from my 20's to the age of 30, I have asked friends and family to contribute to my fund raising efforts. I have registered to participate on the Footsteps of the Maasai Trek in Oct 2007 supporting Action Aid and have a target of £3000 to raise.

My 44th Birthday Party Including a Somewhat Traumatic Haircut!

Hi

Well I combined my 44th birthday bash, with a somewhat dramatic haircut - I had my dreadlocks cut a LOT shorter via a pair of garden shears! - to encourage people to give money to Railway Children, rather than give me a birthday pressie.

And I managed to raise £180 on the night.

Even got a write up in the local rag (Huddersfield Examiner). Shame that didn't lead to any donations lol.

The evening was a lot of fun - apart from the haircutting, that was traumatic!

I'm hoping to upload the cutting of my dreads to YouTube. But the story of how my dreadlocks came to be - I just didn't cut my hair (or brush it) for several years, and they appeared one day as if by magic! (true) - on YouTube right now.

I get married in a little over 3 months (31 May 2008) - and instead of the usual gift list I am trying to raise as much money as possible to support the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The trust rescues and rehabilitates orphaned baby elephants and rhinos whose mothers are killed by ivory poachers in Kenya's Tsavo National Park. I seek to raise fund to make 32 children smile this christmas. I have been with them for over two years now. They have been rendered familyless due to various reasons, ie death of their parents due to HIV/ AIDS, etc. Any amount will go to their up keep this festive season when most people will be feasting.

Forty nights...

As it is my 40th birthday in February 2008 I thought a novel way to raise funds would be to have forty bands/authors (mind you I am up for plugging any band or author I like!) that I have enjoyed so far in my life and have them kindly plug this fundraising page http://www.justgiving.com/fortynights for donations to their fans (be it through a gig, email newsletter, etc) to raise funds for the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy charity. As I plan to do this throughout all of 2008 I hope to raise at least some money for this very worthy and music based charity.

Early days yet but very pleased to get the support of author Robert Rankin plus I have a few more bands to add once they have confirmed a date when they will plug this page.

Not sure if this idea will work at all but I though it worth a try and a way to raise funds for charity.

halloween anniversary

Hi folks

1st time ever in a forum would you believe, so bare with me till I find my cyber legs.

My husband and I are celebrating our wedding anniversary on Halloween and like to do something spooky each year. This time we are taking part in ENABLE Scotland's Fright Night fundraising experience on Nov 10th.

We will spend the night in Edinburgh's very famous and very haunted underground vaults with renowned T.V. psychic and medium David Wells. Apparently there are going to be groups of us holding seances, operating video and sound recording equipment and generally trying to capture some kind of paranormal activity.

Ok as I write this down it really starts to sound totaly MAD. Not mad that we should try it, but mad that I would think for one minute that I will actually last all night. I'll probably be the first one out the door.

Charitable presents for 40th and 60th birthdays and anniversaries

My fundraising initiative is selling old magazines from the date of people's birth. I have loads of magazines coming up to 40 and 60 years old. They make great gifts and I give all proceeds to Cancer Research UK.

I have been doing it for a few months now, starting off selling on ebay but also now selling direct with my own <a href="http://mags4birthdays.co.uk">web site</a>.

It's very time consuming but great fun and rewarding.

If anyone has stacks of old magazines gathering dust in their attics please let me know - I might be able to make good use of them!

I'm 17, and because my birthday isn't until May, I am asking for donations towards my Breast Cancer Care 12 Month Challenge instead of Christmas presents from my friends and family. I don't have an individual target, because my overall target for the twelve months is £5,000!!!

My wedding

My partner and I have decided instead of wedding presents to ask people to donate the money they would have spent to Cat Protection League to help fund vets/food/shelter etc. Our cats came from there 2 years ago and we have no room for anymore so is a feasible way of carrying on helping the charity.

It will be my birthday when I will be in the saddle, and I see from the itinery it will also be our longest day of cycling, I dont think I will be doing much celebrating, so perhaps everyone here can celebrate for me November the 11th, have a drink for me.
