My car has broken down. Is anyone travelling up on Sunday and willing to share a car with a first time Great North Run runner. Am running for Parkinson's Disease Society. OF course I am happy to share petrol. Thanks very much

Aaron
Where to stay in September and running the the Great North Run!

Good evening all, great to see this forum on here, I think I may be using it quite a bit!

I'm a new runner this year and really looking forward to it! I am running for Meningitis UK. At the age of only 7 weeks, my brother, Joe, sadly died of meningitis. It was a really difficult time for my family and I. If I can make even the smallest amount of difference in developing a preventative vaccine, and have an impact into putting a stop to the heartache it causes; then by running in the Bupa Great North Run, in memory of my brother, I hope to make my family proud.

I looked into getting a hotel in Newcastle for the event, but it looks like there are none available, minus the few hotels at £250 a night! Does anyone know if there is anywhere local (Towns, villages etc) that I could stay over and then drive or metro in?! I am very unsure of the area so need some help please!

Many thanks

Danny Sweatman

We then went through the list, and managed to find a pub that had rooms above it for £40 for a double for the Saturday night. Also, free parking too. As the roads outside the pub was Parking Mon-Sat 8am-6pm we could arrive after 6pm, and park until we returned late sunday evening.

Its about a 10min walk from Durham Centre to the train station, so ill take a £4 taxi.

So, in all its costing us £40 for the room, and 2x £7.10 for the train fares into Newcastle.

Other main-line stations are Darlington, which is about another 20mins south of durham on the train. No a big issue but it could mean getting up earlier than wanted.

Dont pay the hyped up prices. Live on the outskirts and avoid that tent city put up at sedgefield racecourse.

Olympic for the deaf & disability

Please dig deep and sponsor me online – it’s quick, easy and totally secure.

Events

It'll be my first time doing a half-marathon. I've been training for a month and doing well but was wondering if people could give me some tips about the actual day/share their experiences with me.

This like how much water to drink before during and after the gnr, training the week before, times a beginner should be looking to complete, common training errors leading to injuries, any other general tips that you may have learned from your experiences.

Any tips/experiences would be greatly received, it'd be good to hear from other runners.

Have you missed out on your chance to run the worlds biggest half marathon? Well don’t worry The Prince’s Trust still has places for the 2008 BUPA Great North Run.

To reserve your guaranteed place call Lesley Hampson on 0191 497 3227 or email lesley.hampson@princes-trust.org.uk you can still run in support of The Prince’s Trust even if you’ve already got your place.

The official ballot has now closed but Youth Charity The Prince’s Trust which supports almost 4,000 disadvantaged young people in the region every year still has guaranteed places left for runners looking for a challenge.

The Prince’s Trust supports young people aged 14-30 who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law. Your contribution to the Trust will stay in the North East and will be used to give practical and financial support for local young people, developing key workplace skills such as confidence and motivation.

This year the famous Newcastle to South Shields road race celebrates its 28th year and will take place on Sunday 5th October, so there’s plenty of time to get in training. Runners start from the Central Motorway, cross the iconic Tyne Bridge in Newcastle and run 13 miles / 21 kilometres point to point to the coast at South Shields.

“Taking part in the Great North Run in support of The Prince’s Trust gives you a massive sense of personal achievement. Having the support from many of my work colleagues, family and friends definitely helped motivate and encourage me. It was even more rewarding to hear my employer chose to match the sponsorship I raised, which benefited the charity even more” – Terry Smith, Finance Director, Canon UK & Ireland

In order to secure your guaranteed place the Trust asks for an entry fee of £100 which is payable in advance and will then be deducted from the minimum sponsorship pledge of £300 that must be raised.

With at least £300 from 50 runners The Prince’s Trust is hoping to raise £15,000 or more towards a target of £30,000. This money will go directly to enabling young people from the North East gain skills and qualifications to access the sport and leisure industry.

The sport and leisure industry has been identified by the Trust as a growth area as a result of an increase in leisure and health activities and the success of the London Olympics bid for 2012. The sporting industry employs a high proportion of young people compared to other sectors[1] and in total employs 2% of all UK workers[2].

These factors provide an ideal opportunity for the Trust’s brand new course Get Into. Get Into courses are two week intensive programmes aimed at unemployed young people aged 16-25 who lack the skills or experience to get a job. The Trust identifies an area of need and works with employers in the local area to provide a focused training course to enable young people to access employment. In this case Get Into Sport and Leisure

Judith Gill Head of Programmes at the Trust said “The money raised will enable The Prince’s Trust to change young lives, allowing us to support more Local young people, helping them learn new skills and access employment specifically in the sport and leisure industry.”

The Prince’s Trust is a registered charity number 1079675 incorporated by Royal Charter
