London to Paris - July 4th

Hi, I signed up to do the London to Paris cycle challenge in July with the Meningitis Trust - so far I haven't received the training and information pack (I have received all the info to bank my fundraising efforts!).

The fundraising is going well, but as we approach March fast I would really appreciate some training hints and tips!

How many miles of training should I be doing a week?

Should I be looking at doing gym sessions as well as cycling?

If anybody can help me with their training hints that would be great.

Many thanks from a slightly worried - Ness

Hi Ness,

I am doing this same ride in September - for Breast Cancer Care!
In the training pack i have it suggests a 20 week schedule if you are a non-cyclist and 10 weeks if you a moderately fit/have cycled before! It says that 1 hour in the gym is equivelant to 2 hours on the bike, but nothing can prepare you for the ride like going out on the bike itself - especially in a head wind!
I have been going out a couple of times a week and doing 15 miles each time but my schedule starts on Saturday, for the first 1-3 weeks it recommends, 10 - 15 miles on Tuesday and Thursday and 25 miles at the weekend!
I can scan the training schedule and email it to you if you like?

Em

Hi Guys,

I have just done a cycle ride in India, came back Feb 10th. The nurse that looked after us on our trip is also doing this ride in July, I started chatting to her, as my borther is also doing this event in July. She said you need to really train on hills, as the north and south downs are very steep !!!  I did a lot of outdoor work for my event and also did spinning classes at the gym, I really believed that the spinning helped me.. Biggest advise would be time in the saddle... It's a bit of a shock spending 8 hours cycling, but well worth it

Hope this helps. you will have a fab time and look out for my brother Simon..

Jools

Hi,

Just responding to your mail, Did you get your pack.

How is the training going, I am mixing road work with the Gym but looking at the cycling schedule we stop every 20k so it should not be to bad.
Time in the Saddle will be the sore point.

Simon.

I am also doing the L2P ride for the Meningitis Trust and have found the J4G site invaluable as a medium to get the money raised to the Trust.
I ahve been training quite hard - up 200k over a weekend but with just 10days to go am stepping down the distance to preserve what's left of the body but keep the legs spinning!

A friend of mine is just back from doing the L2P for Breast cancer Care and is still intact even though she found the first two days challenging in poor weather and over the hills. She tells be the finish is both very satisfying and emotional - save the alcohol until the last night and eat healthily all the way is her tip!
