Does anyone have tips on injury prevention???
Reply Quote

Hi,

Like lots of you the London Marathon 2008 is also my first ever Marathon. I'm sure I'm not alone in the mixed feelings of pure excitement and terror for April 13th!

I think traning is going reasonably well I can now run 20 mile straight but I almost colapsed after that and I'm a bit worried that I don't have enough training time left to build up the extra 6 + miles!

I've also been struggling a bit with a strained ankle (caused because I didn't have my laces tied properly, of all the stupidest mistakes to make) so I've been trying to go easier on it and I've had it in a support bandage but now my knee is also starting to give me a bit of jip (the same leg argg!!!) Does anyone have any tips on how I can get myself back on form. I'm worried about falling back on my training but I also don't want to make my ankle any worse. Not to sound too dramatic about it but I feel like I'm falling apart!

I hope everyones training is going to plan any tips would be muchos appriciated

Dawn

Hi Dawn,

My advise would be to check your ankle out as soon as you can - I had a similar sounding problem during the 2006 marathon and was in agony for most of it!  Now training for my 2nd one, I went to a physio as soon as I felt some niggling and he sorted me out a treat, assesed my running style and basically proved himself to be a bit of a miracle worker!  A little expensive non-NHS but so worth it in the long run (haha :) )

If your ankle feels poorly and you still want to carry on with your training, try running in a swimming pool - so just run underwater as far as you can until you hit the deep end - the water gives you a little more support and so you won't be as likely to strain anything.  Admittedly you do feel a little silly at first and might get some odd looks!

Hope that helps, good luck with your training :)

Chrissy

Hi Chrissy,

I might have to get a mate to come pool running with me so I don't feel too daft! : ) I think I'll give it a few days see if it passes otherwise I might look at getting some proffesional help with it.

Thanks v much for advice

all the best

Dawn

Hi Dawn,
It seems like your training is going well, I'm a first timer too, but I'm not up to 20 miles yet, so well done!
Definitely get your ankle looked at asap. Have you thought about cross training i.e. swimming or cycling/spinning obviously you wouldn't have to put too much pressure on your ankle or knee? It's also a good way to keep up your aerobic exercise. It's a thought! Good Luck anyway.
