Weird question, but does anyone (mainly men) know what is the best thing to wear underneath running shorts. It is my first marathon and am unsure

Jamie,

I am no expert but so far i have been running with lycra cycling type shorts under running shorts, they are quite warm but do not rub, which is the main thing :-)

Jamie, most important i reckon is to avoid chafing - last thing you want is raw skin or blisters in that area. So i recommend briefs (no front opening) and tight lycra shorts. (I draw the line at tights, although i know some runners swear by them.) Wear normal soccer shorts over the top if you feel a bit exposed like that!

Hi Jamie
I'd wear what suits you best, experiment with a few of your long training runs. A light smear of vaseline is used by many.
Myself, well I am just running in a thong www.justgiving.com/bluethong so what ever you decide to wear on the day i bet you'll get less chaffing than me- good luck david

Jamie

I think most men are having the same problem, if you get some specialist running shorts, they have a special liner inside which gives enough support, i have a got a couple of pairs myself and they work fine.  plus the vaseline tip on the inside of the thighs is a good point to note, especially on the long runs.

I have a pair of addidas and ronhill shorts, i prefer the addidas ones, more comfortable.

Good luck with the training

I agree with Daz on this one, but I go one step further.

Until start of Feb I have been training in those knee length Lycra shorts. Lets get the legs strong first. Now, I have started to use the running shorts that Daz describes, but only once a week (I run 5 times per week), which gives your legs chance to aclimatise to tthe rubbing. Also, I shave the inside of my thighs, as it's the hairs that cause the rubbing I have found, and of course a liberal amount of vaseline helps matters no end.

The shaving can iritate, but keep it smooth with a shave every other day and you can copmbat that. If your wife/partner suggest waxing instead, no matter what...REFUSE!!!! it's just a way of hurting you!
