Any Knee specialists out there??
Reply Quote

For some starnge reason I started running about 12 months ago to lose some weight and get fit. Now I find myself running stupid distances every day and entered for the London Marathon. If that is not enough I am now applying through my chosen charity 'The Children's Trust' to run in the New York Marathon this November.

The problem though is nobody had the courtesy of telling my knees about this.

The right knee after 2 x Arthroscopies is fine but the left knee is now like an old bad of spanners, creeking and groaning and hurting like f**k ..!!!!

I cannot get to see a specialist for at least 6-8 weeks but need immediate assistance to keep me in line for training up to 26 miles. "Rock and a Hard place" come to mind...

Any one out there available to receive the symptoms who may be able to offer a diagnosis??

Thanks, Bailey

Hi there!

Looks like you need to rest that knee, tendons and ligaments can become really sore with over use especially if it was weak in the first place.  In the two hours after training try to eat some type of protien rich food, this is the essential time where your muscles and joints require extra protien to help repair.

Rest your knee for a week and see if you can start off again, but at a slower pace.  Need to give that knee some space to sort itself out.

Good Luck!

hiya! i'm no knee specialist but am too training for the london marathon and was running fine until about two weeks ago began to get knee problems anyway after reading a few book i concluded i had runners knee which is basically the cartiledge not getting enough fluid and a cause of running too many miles too soon! well i though to myself! thats no good i need to run a marathon. so i looked at the suggested recovery and it said take three complete days of rest and try to run again i looked at my scedule and though i can miss three days and i'll see if this works!

in the three days i rested the knee using the rice formula rest ice compression elevation.

however immediately after my three day rest i was due to run a 16 miler i thought that would be the ultimate test! i decided to wear my compression bandage over my knee and although everything was hurting at the end of those 16 miles my knee wasn't not one bit. yipee so thats my advice for you!

Hi Bailey. I agree with danabanana that you should have a rest for a few days and try the RICE formula - you could even have a curry with it.

Seriously though, I strained my legs a few years back and I simply reseted for a week, no running and felt fine afterwards. To keep my fitness up I went swimming instead of running as that took all the weight off my legs. The important thing is to give your legs and muscles chance to recover and don't over do it with the training.

Watcha Bailey.

I'm not a knee expert either - just a fellow sufferer.  Interesting thing is I had knee problems before I started training for this, my first marathon.  Noticed that the left knee hurt through certain movements - bit of a problem with the job I do!

Firstly I'd say it's essential that you get the source of your pain found - no harm in going and seeing your GP or a friendly sports therapist - the marathon has a habit of magnifying any slight imperfections and making them major problems.

I would concur with the need for rest and ice, but add the heat therapy too - hot and cold therapy assists in the removal of fluid from "damaged" areas.  I have to disagree with the brace thing though - I kinda think of the knee as a floating bone - sticking anything that forces it into the joint (especially one that is causing problems) can only cause more.  Its a different matter if the cause of your pain is stretched ligaments though, thus the kneed (sorry couldn't help myself) to find the real root of your pain.

For me, I did a bit of reading and found that the drying out of cartiledge is a real problem for runners - taking certain supplements can encourage your body to produce more of the stuff your joints needs to remain mobile and fluid.  If you go into your local GNC or decent health food store they should be able to reccomend stuff for you.  I've been using Glucosamine and Condroitin supplements for a little over a month - major difference.

Good luck.

There is no greater failure, than failing to try. Confuscious (I think!)

Hi Guys, as a sports physio and osteopath i treat lots of runners with knee problems. If i can help just let me know!

Knees injuries in runners in most cases are down to overuse or poor lower limb biomechanics. The location of the pain is important if you need a diagnosis. As most problems are soft tissue then ice always helps reduce pain and inflammation.

Make sure you address any overpronating issues you may have by getting a decent set of orthotics made to your prescription and wear them all the time, not just in your running footwear.

If you have patella tendonitis try wearing a patella strap when you run, this can make a big difference.

if you need injury advice email me on jwosteopath@yahoo.com

Good luck on the big day!

I suffer with problems with my knees aswell.  At the minute i wear a brace around one knee, which seems to do the trick and it is not a problem when i run in it either..  so i do recommend a brace, i got mine from boots for about £17.  After my runs i do put ice on the back of the knee, to bring out any swelling and it makes it recover quicker.

Plus another trick i learnt when playing rugby the cause of my bad knees, is called 2's and 1's.  When you are in the shower, aim the shower head at the back of your knee, for 2 mins on warm and straight after that turn it to cold and hold it for 1 min, repeat this about 3 or 4 times.  This helps to bring out the swelling, helps in recovery time and gets the blood flowing around the joints and helps get rid of the lactic acid.

Hope it helps.
