Hi gang,
Has anyone went and got Rabies injections for the hike? My GP has come back with a bill of £116 for it. A) I don't fancy them anyway and B) I am wondering whether they are necessary.
They have come back and said in total I need Hep A, Typhoid booster, Yellow fever, then Rabies and Hep B if camping rough.
It would be really useful if someone could ask them this weekend if they think those measures are necessary.
Thanks, Al.

Hi Alan,
I am having Rabies injections ( 3 altogether). I was told that although rabies is presant in the country you should be ok as long as you don't stroke and cuddle dogs and the like. You might be OK without the injection, however because we are going to be more than 24 hours away from proper medical facilities it is highly recommended we have it. My GP quoted a similarly high price.
Best Wishes John (and Angus)

I had a chat with the nurse today about them and she admits that the risk is not massive, but it is there and there were reports of several peruvians dying from it in the last few weeks.
One thing she did point out to me is that, whilst I was thinking I would just make sure I don't go near any cats or dogs etc. It's the bats that we need to worry about!
I have decided to have a think about it. The other thing to note, is that the injections don't stop it, they mearly assist the treatment.
I would appreciate people down in London on Saturday to ask what they feel about it and whether or not the doctors on the hike with us will be equiped to deal with an animal bite. If not what is the procedure for getting us to medical assistance?
Thanks.

The Meeting in London was very interesting and we will be getting a fact sheet shortly about it. It was also good to meet some of our fellow trekkers!
I made a few notes for those who couldnt get there so here we go -
Sleeping Bag - Need comfort factor of Zero - ignore the minus 8 degrees or whatever it says on it. Also recommend a sleeping bag liner.
Luggage - not a suitcase - you need sail bag or large rucsac to get everything in. When we get to Cusco you leave at the hotel whatever you don't want or need e.g. clothes for the celebration meal. On the trek the porters will carry 8kg of your belongings. You will carry the rest e.g. spare clothes; 2 litres of water per day (platypus suggested); walking poles; waterproofs; comfortable shoes etc. It was suggested a 30-35 litre day rucsac would be adequate - just depends what you want to put in it!
Walking Boots - wear them on plane so they dont get lost in transit.
Sun Tan Lotion - minimum factor 30 - try and get the single application type that lasts all day
Earplugs - for light sleepers
Insect Repellant - for midgets not mosquitos!
Alcohol hand cleaner - to help make sure you dont get the trots!
The leader of the trip is a bloke called Greg who wont be having rabies shots! He said he has done the Inca Trail 12 times and on seven of those people have been unable to finish the trek and had to be sent back. Bit frightening that as obviously everybody wants to finish it. He kept stressing the importance of acclimatisation and how importance your fitness will be and also that you have to take it slowly. Greg cited the case of a super fit keep fit fanatic who went hell for leather the first day and on day 2 after a couple of hours was sent back as he wasn't well enough to carry on! Hearing that first hand certainly gives you food for thought!
Food - sounds like it'll brill. Porridge with jam for breakfast; 3 course lunch and 3 course tea. As many chips as you like!
How far is the trek? I dont think we got a proper answer to that only "78,000 STEPS!"
Hope everyone has got their training in hand. Seeya at Heathrow. Greg says "DONT BE LATE!"

No no, I hear the peruvian Midgets can be quite deadly! And there are no injections that stop them so apply plenty of cream.
Thank you to both ledge and John for their info, it's been really useful.

Hi all,
I went for my injections yesterday. Got a polio, diptheria and tetnus booster plus typhoid and hep A. Doc didn't charge me for them. Having to go to a seperate clinic to get the yellow fever one, doing that on wed, getting charge £45. Not looking forward to this one as it's a live vaccination so there's the possibility I may feel unwell after it. I've decided I'm not going to get the rabies injection.
Hope everyones fundraising and training is going well. Looking forward to May.
cu all soon
Jen xx

The yellow fever vaccination is a must if you're going on the extented trip to the rain forest; which I guess you must be going on Jen since you're doctor strongly recommended it.

Rosie,
Now you've got me confused. I'm not going on the extension trip, Dr. was aware of this but I'm getting conflicting info so will have to check this out more.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ok have spoken to the an infections disease clinic who have advised that even if we're only travelling to Machu Picchu it is still highly recommended we get the yellow fever vaccination. This is due to Peru being an endemic zone and upon entry or exit of the country a yellow fever certificate may be requested at the airport before you can enter or leave the endemic zone.
Long story short I'm going to get the vaccination to be on the safe side. I'd be gutted after doing all the training and fundraising to get there and be turned away.
I was told by my doctor a couple of weeks ago that I wouldn't need the yellow fever injection if I was only going on the Inca Trail, it was only for the rain forest trip. Just pulled this from another website regarding injections -
Vaccinations
The recommended vaccines to travel to Peru are :
Yellow fever if you are going to the jungle areas ( Puerto Maldonado, Manu,Tambopata,Iquitos,etc). The Health Ministry has recently informed that no cases of yellow fever have been reported for the past 15 years, but the vaccination is still a local requirement. You will be requested to show a certificate upon arrival to Puerto Maldonado.
Hope we don't need it, realy didn't fancy this one or the one for rabies.
I am heading down from Newcastle ledge. Going to have to take the earlier flight though, because the connection I want gets me in 2 hours before we set off and they want us there for 3 :(
