Hi everyone,
Just a quick question regarding luggage for the trip. I've been told that airlines won't let you take a 30ltr backpack on board as hand luggage, so I was wondering what everyone was doing for their main luggage - big backpack or suitcase? I'm just thinking that to hold a sleeping bag / day bag / mat / etc it's going to have to be pretty big. But is a suitcase going to be a bit awkward when you get to the other side? Any ideas?
Paul

Hi Paul,
I am not entirley certain how it is going to work but I was planning to take a 65 litre backpack with most of my gear in it that will end up in the hold. I was then planning to take a small rucksack on board that would mainly house my camera equipment.
However I am planning to hang onto the 65 litre bag during the hike because of the supports that it has in it and the fact that I can have a platypus in etc.
Would be nice to know who we are flying with so we can check out their bagage policy's as I have found that it can vary from airline to airline with US airlines being the worst.

Hey guys,
just a quick heads up...NO SUITCASES! it says so in our welcome pack...its because we're not going to actually be carrying our own large bags and so it's unfair if not impossible to get someone else to heave a suitcase up the mountains for ya!

You really need to ask your tour operator about these things. My hike is being run by Ultimate Travel Company, on behalf of Scope.
We can take our luggage in a suitcase and leave it in the hotel for the duration of the hike, just transfer all the stuff we need to a hold-all for the 5 days. Also, Ultimate are supplying us with our ground mats, will be purifying our water for us and our plates and stuff, so it all means we will have slightly less to pack then the lists suggest.
We have already had our info day, which cleared up loads of questions, like why I couldn’t find our route in any guide books. Easy, Ultimate uses its own route.
Also we were told that we didn’t need to have the yellow fever jabs unless we had visited a country prone to it in the last 12 months, and didn’t need to take malaria unless we were staying on for the extension as mosquitoes cannot survive at high altitude. However, your insurance company might want written proof (as mine did) from your GP that these aren’t necessary, and he’s probably going to recommend them as that’s what the home office website suggests, and he wants to make money out of you!

Hello Again,
Just spoke to Discover Adventure regarding the backpack / suitcase thing and they say that although the bag will be left at the hotel, a suitcase isn't ideal. They recommend a large backpack or soft bag. With regards to taking a 30ltr daypack on board as hand luggage, it seems it just depends on the airline and to check the BAA website for more info on hand luggage sizes. But I was also told that this info changes quite regularly.
I think to save hassle, I'll just take a large bag, a 30ltr daypack, and I was having a look at this website -
http://www.pro-tector.co.uk/rucksack.html
May just get one of these and put everything in the hold.

I read that you should line you bag with chicken wire to stop "bag slashers" from nicking your gear! Hope that was an over exageration!

Hi Guys,
I hope I'm not the bearer of bad news, but a friend of mine who trekked the Inca Trail with Macmillan last year told us that they all had to leave half the contence of their backpacks in Lima or Cusco and share a backpack with a fellow trekker - by doing this it helped the porters carrying less packs - you will of course be able to take a smaller backpack to carry your cameras etc in.

See you in London,
Rosie

Hi Rosie,
Ledge (post above) is on the extension. And I should be if my doc gets back to me shortly. I'm worried about having to pay for jabs becasue I was made redundant in December and I don't want to commit too much cash.
He also said that at least 4 others are on it too.
Fingers crossed.

I notice this chap also sells the protector from his ebay shop and they are £3 to £5 pounds cheaper on there. I bought one and it seems ok. I'll bring it to London if you want to have a look.
Best Wishes John (and Angus)

Hi All,
Just thought I'd draw your attention to a program that's being shown on Chanel 4 on Saturday at 5.35pm. The program's called The Search or Search, it's an on going program and it's a treasure hunt. This week however it takes place in Peru and they start off in Cuzco and I believe they go to Machu Picchu.

Hi John,
Thanks for the info on the rucksack protectors, I shall certainly check it out. I've just looked at your web site - it's brilliant you've worked so hard in memory for your lovely sister - I take my hat off to you ... and that little Angus he's a doll .... pardon the pun but I love him!

I have ordered one off the website, it came very quickly and looks pretty decent. It's a nice light weight and will hopefully make it less obvious to oppurtunist hands.
Have fun in London all, wish I had the cash to go down. If anyone is driving and going past Durham, you can swing past and pick me up lol
