Hi

Just found your message on the forum. I'm also taking part in the Great Wall of China trek in August 2008 for Scope. It looks like there will be 2 of us having to do loads of training beforehand.

Hi there

So far so good with my fundraising, although it seems a little slow going - the trainings another matter especially in the cold and wet!!

Hey all!

Me and my girlfriend will be coming along! Very daunting raising the money, after a week i have £500 in pledges so a good start!

How are you all getting on with the fundraising?

Trainings going well, planning on doing a long walking holiday in Peak District or somewhere similar before we go!

Whereabouts is everyone from? Have you done anything like this before? look forward to meeting you all!

Gotta start thinking about training and fund raising after Xmas!

We're regular runners/swimmers but having seen pictures of some of the climbs we're gonna do I think a training month somewhere very high may be needed!

It will be our silver wedding anniversary half way through the challenge. I'm still trying to work out how to transport an ice bucket for the champagne!

Anyone know how many people will be in the group?

Hey everyone!

We've just got confirmation that we're doing the trek with you lot next August, can't wait!  So how is everyones fundraising going?  We've got just over a grand between us since Halloween so still SO far to go....actually quite scary....

Mike has lots of trekking experience in the UK thanks to his childhood 'holidays' but I'm definitely totally inexperienced so we are going to start training hard in Jan...any tips?!  I'm not looking forward to working off my Christmas dinner!

Big Smile [:D]

Be interesting to know where everyone is from, were in Essex, near the Dartford Crossing if anyone is local??

Kirsty & Mike x

Hi to everyone.

I'm with you Kirsty, no trekking experience at all - just a few hikes with my Guide Company. I live in Loftus in North Yorkshire but until 5 years ago lived in Grays in Essex and before that Canvey Island, so probably not to far from where you are.
I'm really looking forward to the trek - just not the training......... Fundraising is progressing but slowly.

Hi Diane!

I cannot believe that, I grew up in Grays and moved to East Tilbury only last year.  Weird!  I have got about £500 so far and I have made a plan about how Mike and I can fundraise the rest and I actually lack a bit of confidence now, I'm not sure its possible!  We have a shortfall of about 2 grand so how on earth we are going to get that I have no idea....does anyone have any inspiration?  Ive got a lot of smaller things going, ie raffles etc, but that doesn't raise huge amounts...the two we have just done raised just over £100 each.....

K&M:

Don't lose faith! quite daunting raising this amount of money, i'm only up to £700ish (haven't actually collected this amount - but have it in pledges) maybe try a supermarket collection? obviously friends/family/colleagues etc should be happy to give you donations, why not trying giving forms out to friends/family - ask them to ask their friends and family?

Try writing to local companies for sponsership? What about a car boot sale - ask friends/family for any unwanted christmas gifts - then do a boot sale in the new year?

I'll be doing all these things, and will keep you updated on how much money they raise.

Other 'ideas' i've had include organizing a charity football match, and the possibility of putting on a 'gig' asking local bands I know to play - obviously these things take a lot of time and energy to organize!

Good luck all,

Dan

Hey Dan,

Thanks for the motivation! I've already actioned everything you said, including the footie match.  A couple of uncles are trying to put that together for us.  My mum owns a pub so thats going to be pretty useful I think, we raised £200 at a Halloween Party there, and I think I'm going to throw a new years party as well.  We've got quite a few raffles etc going on, and I'm in the middle of trying to negotiate the cost of hiring my local hall to throw a rock n roll bash as theres a big rock and roll members club not far from where I live.

There are things in the pipeline, I'm just scared!!Wink [;)]
