Blind Cyclist Planning Lands End to John O Groats
Reply Quote
Hiya Every1,
My Name is Phill. I am ex Army and am 44 years old. I have a slight problem, I'm registered as blind.Cool [H] Its like looking through the bottom of a tupperware container. Can tell light from dark and make out vague shapes, but thats it.
Anyway I am planning on  cycling the lands end to john o Groats next year. On my own.  Most blind people ride on a tandem not me though I want to do it on a single seater !!!  Crazy dude Big Smile <img src=">   I am planning on cycling 100miles per day.  I am planning on doing it in the first two weeks of July. So if anyone is interested in joining me then you are most welcome.  I live in North east Hants so if there is someone local I would love to train with you. I am thinking maybe 15 20 every other day to start. What do you think ??  Hopefully I have an Army support team giving invaluable assistance.
The charity I will be doing it for is St. Dunstans.
See the website
www.st-dunstans.org.uk
If anyone could give any advice it would be greatly appreciated.  I called a very well known bike and car accessory company yesterday and they told me that they do not sponsor or help charities other than the one they allready are helping Sad <img src=">  So at the mo I am feeling a bit deflated, no pun intended as to a flat tire.
Well that me folks. Any advice, help, critiscism is all greatly appreciated and will be acted on.
By the way is anyone interested in doing Mount Everest for charity ??  Lest just say 10 Pin Bowling and Mount Everest..  See if anyone can work it out from the clues Huh? [:^)]Let me know and I will happily give full details.  Its a great way to make tons of cash for your fav charities and enjoy a game of bowling

Hello Philip
I to am disabled but in a power chair and I to am going to ride from E2E but in June in a Powerchair. You can read my blog if you wish. http://www.powerwheelchaire2e.blogspot.com/
I am also ex forces, Womens Royal Air Force. but a bit older than you say 18 years older, that makes me 60.
You are asking for help.
The best help i have found when I started this adventur process was to contact chap called Jact Adam from the E2E association email address JACK ADAMS .
...I wish they would not make these boxes so small to type in when they have so much free space on this page...
Fund raising. Now that is a big one to tackle. I found for another event I was entering, that fund raising for single people is a none starter. I have that to look forward to with this new challenge. I have been told that bingo halls, local pubs, sponsor events, like the Great North Cycle Ride are a good sourse.
If you can get on my blog, perhaps we can exchange ideas.
Good luck.
Mary Laver

Hi Phil,
Can I just say that what you are going to do is amazing. It can be hard enough cycling with good eyesite let alone with a visual impairment. How do you do it?
I'm hoping to do E2E in 2010 for Naomi House Children's Hospice. I live in Hampshire and wish I could do 100 miles every couple of days but it wouldn't be possible. My average speed is only 11 - 12 mph depending on the roads.
Have you thought about joining your local ctc group, they're very supportive and usually have a group that cycle at about average 15 mph. They also do cycling events which are great for using as training. One being the Watership Down ride on 11th January which is about 63miles and a tad hilly i gather.
Good Luck with both your training and challenge.

Sarah
