Concern about the way Justgiving works

Whilst of course I think Justgiving is a wonderful idea etc etc, I am a little bemused as to why the money raised is taken before the actual event takes place. The whole point of sponsoring someone is that you are sponsoring them to do an event, otherwise they might as well just send round begging letters. A friend of mine was due to run the London Marathon, raised loads of money and was then ill and didn't take part. And yet all of the money had already (months before) been whisked out of peoples accounts.  Anyone care to justfiy this counter-intuitive and frankly immoral way of doing things?

Hi Tonka,

Thank you for your feedback on how Justgiving works.

In the past, the site accepted 'pledges' to fundraising pages - users would input their card details and then the money would come out of their account after the event. In September of 2006 we made security enhancements to the site which meant that this option was no longer viable. The 'delayed processing' mechanism was no longer compatible with the enhanced security measures that were deployed.

For example, we ask your donors to enter the 3-digit security code at the back of their cards. Because this code authenticates the donor as the rightful owner of the card, it cannot be stored in any circumstances by Justgiving. Because pledges involved the storage of a donor’s card details until the transaction could be processed, we were no longer able to support them.

These enhancements make Justgiving the most secure place to donate to charity online and as only 10% of our users chose to 'pledge' rather than 'donate' it was the right call to turn this option off in order to make the entire site as secure as possible.

I hope this answers your query.

Kind regards,

Elizabeth
