Hi Jen,

I have just returned from trekking the Inca trail and all I can say is - I'm jealous of you. I would give anything to be back there right now. It was the most amazing experience of my life.

It is mostly tough, and some bits are very tough but the pace is very slow, and as long as you don't get hit by the altitude, you'll have no problems. I did some training before I went but was convinced it wouldn't be enough, yet I managed 4 days of early starts and up to 13 hours trekking and felt fine. It's so beautiful you don't even think about whether you are tired.

Good luck, and enjoy,

S

Hi All!

Just a quick note to say I'm back from trekking the Andes in one piece!

What an amazing adventure. It all went brilliantly, we were tremendously well looked after, and despite the fact we were camping, the food was great! ;)

We didn't go over the traditional Inca Trail, but one set up through Accross the Divide that's carefully monitored for signs of erosion etc. As a result we saw NO tourists until the Machu Picchu day (hurrah!) and we got to interact with the local communities much more. Also, our highest point was a whopping 4500m which most of us really felt the effects of. (ME= headache, nausea, dizzyness, breathlessness... unpleasant.)

My advice for training? Get up as many MOUNTAINS as you can before you leave!

I have a blog site you can visit here=> http://5ft-trek.blogspot.com There will shortly be a link to my photos from the trek on there too.

Keep on trucking!
;)
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for putting the link up to your pictures, they look great.  Helps inspire me to carry on with the fund raising.  Still on target.

If anyone is interested in seeing what I have been doing you can take a look at www.quid-durham.com

Cheers,

Al.

Hi Pamela

I am also hoping to go the Peru in May, but not yet registered, waiting to go for my medical.

Published my website a couple of weeks ago, and have been blown away by the response from people, I already have nearly £500, plus my company will match £250.  So a good start!

Not sure about the training, completed a 10k sponsered walk a couple of weeks ago, but that was on the flat, and have bought a step machine so build up the muscles.  But my biggest fear is the outdoor living, they are all taking the mickey out of me at work, because I go everywhere with dry hand wash and wet wipes!!

It is a bit daunting looking at the target, but I am hoping to have a "daffodil do" in March which will hopefully raise the majority.

I am sure it will be here before we know it!

See you in May.

Yeah I noticed that Ledge.

That central place of London, really handy for us up here hmph.

No I won't be going for the day.

Ledge, do you remember what the deadline is for signing up for the extension?  My girlfriend is thinking about paying for it for my birthday but I think I may be a bit late.  Will try and call any way but any information that you have might be handy.

Thanks,

Al.

Deadline is 18th Feb 2007!  If you arrange your travel insurance through Discover Adventure the £66. covers the extension as well.  I'll send you a seperate email with some more info.  I was the first to sign up and they need a minimum of 2!  I don't know if anyone else has signed up yet.

OK, I will twist my GF's arm to see if I can do this lol  And then at least you know you will have 2.  The only down side is that I don't want to take malaria tablets again, becasue they make me ill.

Question for Ledge and anyone in the northern part of the UK, is anyone interested in setting up our own gathering in somewhere like York, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle.  Becasue getting to London from Durham is just an expensive affair and a pain in the backside at the best of times.
We can inform Macmillan of our intentions and tell them that they can send a rep if they wish?

Just a thought.

Tremendous idea! I'm up for that. I'm 30mins from Leeds or Manchester and 45mins from York. London might be easier for me than Newcastle!  York is on a major railine so might help those north of the border.  Come on everyone lets hear from ya!

I got a book on Peru and read about River Rafting near Cusco. Fancy that on the day off?

Yeah, Malaria tablets aren't very nice but neither is Malaria (I imagine)

r.e. malaria tablets.

Lima, Cusco and the Inca Trail are non-malarial. (Thankfully. Having had a selection of innoculations, I wouldn't have fancied taking tablets too.) Course, if you're heading into the jungle or low lying areas away from lima etc you will be at risk.

We were all munched on a fair bit by mossies, but to be honest, it was usually when I didn't coat myself in deet. Take 100% deet with you, use it often and you'll be fine!

I got a copy of the Lonely Planet Book on Peru from a Charity Shop for a quid which contains loads of good information. I also bought two on Amazon for about £20 - The Inca Trail Cusco and Machu Picchu and Explore the Inca Trail
