Hi Kirsty,
I did my first Marathon this year and i have to say i really had enjoyed it.![Smile [:)]](/emoticons/emotion-1.gif)
Just one tip thou, ensure you do weights on your legs aswell as running etc as this will help you in your last 10 mile this will help you not hitting the wall.[ this will be explained in your newsletter.
When doing the marathon always run with water and grab at every water station and drink plenty but in small amounts and keep hold of it.
The night of the Marathon [when you get home] have two cans of lager or coke in the fridge, this will help your arches on your feet , place your feet over the cans and slowly roll your feet over them, believe me this really works and ease the pain as your feet will be slightly sore.
Oh one last thing, make sure you get your trainers fitted by an expert, i know they can be expensive but it will be worth every penny on the day.
All the very best in your training and good luck for next year, enjoy it, because its amazing feeling when you finish![Big Smile [:D]](/emoticons/emotion-2.gif)

Hi Ronnie,
I posted my own message just now and then came down to read Kirsty's. You make sense and the info is valuable. This will be my first marathon too. Where should I ideally get my trainers fitted?

Hi Smartini,
Regarding where to get your feet measured for Trainers, go to a Sports shop [not jjb or sports world] or a running store that specialised in Running etc, they will put you on a running machine to see how your feet works when you run, You be shown a few Trainers and advice.
It can be expensive but honestly good fitting will make your run easier on the day.
I hope this will help you.

Hi Kirsty,
I'm also popping my marathon cherry at next year's london marathon in aid of Kidney Research. I've found the Flora First Timerswebsite to be quite helpful for idea on training and fundraising too.
Best of luck and hope training is well under way!

I would like to run the marathon for kidney research also Vicki, but I
have to raise the funds to cycle across Cuba for the charity only two
months before the marathon, so I'm hoping I will get a place in the
normal ballot and then raise as much as I can for Kidney research!
I am a bit worried as I'm rubbish at running!!!!
Off to Cycle Cuba 14th-24th Feb

Hi there,
Im raising money for the British Liver Trust and the Queen Elizabeth Liver Unit and providing I get accepted Im running the Flora London marathon as well and like a lot of you its my first. However, as part of my training for it Im running the reading half marathon on 2nd March 2008 as well. Is anyone else running the reading marathon?
Unfortunately I wished Id sought your advice about the shoes earlier. Iv just bought a pair of running shoes from JD Sports none the less. Feel abit of an idiot for doing it now. Does anyone training for the marathon live in the hertfordshire area? I get the feeling the training experience is about to become alot harder, with the short days and cold winter. Still bring it on!
My blog explains my story and reasons behind this charity. www.myspace.com/dougal126

Hi,
I have tried to get a place on the London Marathon for 4 years and finally this year I got a Golden Bond place, I did not hear until Christmas, but I have done some running in anticipation of getting a place. I have done 5 and 10k races, but everyone says the marathon is so different. I have got my training programme, 10k next week, 13.1 miles in 1 month and 20miles in 2 months, so now I am thinking, will I be able to do this. I will cross that finish line if it takes me a week. Anyone got any more tips on fundraising that will help. I will also invest in a good pair of running trainers as some have suggested. What I would like to know, is should I get them now and well and truly break them in or should I get them nearer the time?

Griggsy,
Get your running shoes now. A pair last about 4-500 miles, and you;re not going to wear them out before the race, so might as well get them, and your feet, worn in nice and early.
