Big Smile [:D]Hello Susanne no Z nice to meet you! Apologies for the mistake. Glad you are doing so well with the fund raising. Have about £250 at the moment. Signed on to www.easyfundraising.org.uk and will be passing that on - thank you for who ever suggested it. Have put a portfolio together of the trip and left it in the office for our patients to see. Am thinking of having some business cards made up with what we are doing and why and web sites that people can contribute to. That way you can just hand it to them and they are beautifully purse size (how handy)! I start at the gym next week and have decided not to beat myself up too much about the fact I have had a couple of weeks off. I am looking forward to meeting everyone, I am sure someone said at Action for Charity that they send out a list of people so that you can train with others in your area. How lovely a weekend in the Cotswolds that should be team bonding with all those hills!

I held by first big event last night, a curry night,It was a great success, I made just over £800!! I had 56 people come along, the curry house charged me £7 per head and I asked for donations at the end of at least £10 per person, some people gave more,I asked everyone to bring an item to either auction off or use as a prize for raffle, bingo etc. so nearly everyone left with something. It was great fun. I am over half way there now with the fundraising, which is just brilliant, soon I will have no excuse left not to really knuckle down with the training!

Well done Suzanne! Its a great feeling when you hit a milestone isn't it? I am now over £2000 and can't quite believe it! Did anyone see This Morning today? They were speaking to Fern who is on day 2 of the cycle ride.....conditions sound interesting.....she'd already had two punctures today and her chain off 3 times! Lots of potholes, animals and sounds like the plumbing isn't too great!! Weather well into the 80's. Quite bizarre though - it hasn't put me off - think I must have developed a warped sense of humour!!! Will be interested to see the filmimg when she gets back!

Wow Guys! think you are all doing amazingly with the fundraising. Watched this morning today, they spoke to Fern on the telephone, it sounds really difficult, most of them at some point today have been in tears and a few have cuts & bruises and some are suffering from sickness!!! What have we all done?

My fundraising is going ok but not as good as it could be.  I've raised £450 so far (£300 by holding an aerobic event) i'm holding a Ladies night on friday and ticket sales have been slow, I will let you know how it goes.  I haven't really done that much in the form of training.  I have an old Raleigh and i'm hoping to be able to use that with a gel saddle for all my training, I did consider buying a new bike, but have you seen how expensive they are?  Is anyone in the same position?  I'm in the Bristol area, and a friend Heather is joining me, is there anyone else close by?

How many of us does that make now?

Hi Loz, I too have an old Raleigh mountain bike, probably too heavy but I didn't want to spend on a newer bike, I did put on a gel saddle and a computer so that I can see how many miles and speed I do etc. I didn't see This Morning but it seems everyone I see has and is saying do you know what you have let yourself in for? the answer has to be no if we did, we wouldn't have done! The curry night was a great fundraiser, try a local curry house they were very keen and since I planned this one other curry houses have approached me to hold one at their restaraunt. They charged £7 per head for the food, and I asked everone for at least £10, so that was £150 straight away, and some folks gave more, I then asked for £3 for a strip of raffle tickets, 3 games of reverse bingo and a go at guessing the name of a big cuddley dog, another £150, then I asked everyone to bring a small item that could be raffled or auctioned, and asked some local businesses for items too. We then auctioned off about 20 things that raised about £400, nearly everyone left with something and the night was really good fun.the restaurant benifits from the publicity and on the bar, and it didn't take too much organising really. I did a leaflet on each table about the ride and charity etc. and got all the bookings beforehand and told people to let me know if they were unable to come, so I was guaranteed the numbers, there were 56 of us altogether.

I am no where near Bristol I am afraid, it would be great to have someone to train with, I am in Stoke-on-Trent

Feeling way behind everyone! Got some ideas together but aiming to do it all feb/mar time. I keep hearing about the Fern Britton interviews just never around to see them. Like the idea of the India evenings very appropriate, am planning an evening at a local fish restaurant. So shall try a local indian restaurant as well.

Take care all.

Hi Suzanne, Laura here! (Loz)

Got the feeling you were a bit down earlier, I've had a down day today too!  I'm holding a ladies night tonight and have had loads of interest but people reluctant to hand over the cash.  Have managed to sale a reasonable amount though and the evening should be fun.  The thing that's got me down, is friends that I really thought I could rely on let me down. I do appreciate that a ladies night is not everyone's cup of tea but not one has even offered to make a donation or purchase anything from the Body shop or Virgin vie (knowing that all commission will be donated) and with Christmas coming there's always a gift that you could buy!!!  My friends also know why I am doing this challenge and why the charity means so much to me. But i think 'Hey my True friends will remain true' and I decided much later this afternoon not to let it bother me.  At the end of the day, what we are all doing is fantastic, god it's going to be so hard (and I'm just talking about the fundraising!) but worth every painful, tearful and triumphant moment and what a great charity to do it for.  We just have to stay strong and support each other the best we can!  Keep your chin up!  will let you know how it goes tonight.

You may be really surprised, I was last Friday, with the curry night, I had said if I made £300 I would be really pleased and then went on to make £800!!!!!!!! What I have found is some people you thought would be very keen and supportive aren't and then you get some real surprises from other people. In the end, we know why we are doing this and believe in it, and this will shine through to others. I have seen that this years ride, taking place this week will feature on THIS MORNING nearly everyday next week this will give US a big boost I think when people see what WE will be doing.

All the best for tonight Laura, will be thinking of you!

Susanne

I know exactly what you mean. Its hard not to take it to heart though. But you realise who your true friends are, and meet others along the way, thats what I am finding anyway. The films on This Morning will be interesting....it has sounded hard going for the ladies this week. Much harder than The Nile Fern said. But we will be fine. It wouldn't be a challenge if it was plain sailing would it? My knee is steadily improving. Been back to the physio today who is pleased, and says worst case I could strap it anyway. Hes already talking of me cycling Lands End to John O'Groats!! India will do for now thankyou very much!! Hope the Ladies Evening goes well tonight Laura. Let us know how you get on. Sarah x

Good luck to you all for doing the fundraising.  I was down to do the cycle India next October, but the friend who persuaded me to do it - now can't do it!!  So instead we are doing The Big Heart Bike Ride in Cuba next April (6 months earlier than I thought!!).  We have our first fundraising event on 8th December as a race night and so far we seem to have sold about 70 tickets - not bad for a Friday night before Christmas.  I know what you mean about close friends that you thought you could rely on (who would be your support for such an event) not turning up, but the other support we have had has been excellent.  Although I'm not doing the cycle India, I keep checking your emails and it is one thing I really miss as there is nothing like this set up for Cuba - I have posted a notice but only got 1 reply!!  So keep on going girls - keep on supporting each other and you will all get there in your fundraising and have a very memorable time (probably for masses of different reasons!).  ENJOY!!  Kim

Good morning to all,  Thanks for your kind words of support.  Ladies night was fantastic.  Had about 40 ladies in end, less than I hoped (was expecting another 10 at least but they did'nt show!!)  Anyway raised a total of £650 but haven't taken in to account my overheads! women for women will see at least £300.  hoped to raise alot more but its £300 in the right direction.

Can highly recommend the Stripper!!!

Well done Laura! I think the first fundraiser is the most nerve-wracking. Try and get a thankyou to everyone in the local paper, including your just giving web address is you have one. I am busy doing newsletters to pop into Christmas cards at the moment! Bye for now, Sarah

That's great Laura, well done! I have just seen Fern Britten's video diary on This Morning seems as if there will be something on each day this week.( I am at work, but caught it whilst on my visit to one of my areas of responsibility who happened to have the TV on! but not sure I can engineer that every day, will have to learn to set the video recorder, another challenge!!) Looked a bit scary, lots of dust, then mud, and very bumpy, they had to terminate the ride for some people on the first day, as they ran out of time to complete all the miles they should have, although some did do it. The organiser for Action for Charity said it was probably going to be the toughest challenge that they had done for Women for Women! But it has got me very excited, and I can't wait to get there, and we have the advantage that when we go they will have done it twice, last week and this week and so hopefully will have learnt a lot. India looks amazing!!! Try and catch the other programmes if you can this week. Fern Britten looked pretty well this morning, saying she only just got back, which gave me a bit of hope!!

Mmmm....I have just seen the video on this morning too!!! Sat watching it with my mum and dad!!!  Felt quite emotional watching it, trying not to show that infront of mum and dad though! It looked really tough, but still very excited. It makes it all seem real. We must be bonkers!

Sadly I missed 'This morning' due to work, but I'll watch it tomorrow, now back to work following maternity leave and only work Mon & weds. My son 'Freddie' turned 8mths on Sat (where does the time go) he's getting more and more active each day but i'm sure i'll be able to keep him quiet while I watch it.  Kind of been on a high since the ladies night, will be organising  ladies night 2!! for end of Feb.  I'm amazed how many women have said that they thoroughly enjoyed it and would love it if I held another. Word of mouth is what I need, so hopefullly it will be bigger and better.
