03-30-2007, 0:25 Wilsonator Joined on 03-29-2007 Nottingham Posts 7 Re: GREAT NORTH RUN 2007 Hi Jase, I am not an expert but i did the Notts Marathon last year in 1Hr51min. and before i started training last year i was a mess....so heres some serious tips from a normal persons perspective. 1 - dont run fast !!! why your body will develope its own pace and the pace will change over time..there is never a need to force it. 2 Always run to a time so run say for 40 mins dont run to distance say 3 miles, it better to run to a time, it does not matter what speed but you must be on the road for 40min. do this 3 times a week at least for the whole training program - remember any speed. after a couple of months incorporate one longer run again not fast very slow but run for 1hr20min. doing this you will become fitter by default but without pressurising yourself on how far you have run. you will know when your body can push for a little more speed as it will simply let you know, otherwise dont push it. I am 38 and i can only run at a pace of an 8min mile 7.5 on a good day. oh by the way however awfull it may be you must use hills in your training i beg you i know i know you simply dont want to, but you have too as the GNR has a huge one. regards for now .... 03-31-2007, 22:07 Wilsonator Joined on 03-29-2007 Nottingham Posts 7 Re: GREAT NORTH RUN 2007 Hey Jase not a problem, I have just ran my first 55min run and it slaughtered me no doubt....but just crawled back without stopping - thats another tip do not stop in your training ever unless you have to go pee just slow down, otherwise you are telling your brain its ok, and for the rest of your training and on the race day if things get tough youll just give in and stop....train to not allow yourself. I am going to be cheeky now, as i have just relised that you are from Newcastle - can you help me with accessing accomidation for the weekend - not you personally, but do you know anyone that could help....I would pay? just dont really want to have to pay £50 per night as it looks like at present. I lived in Newcastle for a couple of years and the metro system is the best form of transport. If I remember, they put on loads of extra trains on Gt North Run day, so if you're near a metro station, then that is your best bet.
