Hi there! With regards to the pain between the shoulders - I experienced that at the beginning. My husband altered my handlebars and I have been fine since. My problem at the moment is achy knees....went to the doctors yesterday and she says I would benefit from pyhsio and a strapping....4 month waiting list!! Quite down in the dumps about it, as I don't want to stop the training, and then out of the blue this morning, I have been given an appointment for next week! So feeling a bit happier today. Fundraising going extremely well. Next "do" being a Virgin Vie/card/glass painting evening at home next month. Has anyone else signed up who lives in the Nottingham/derby area? Sarah

Sarah - silly question I know but did your husband take the handlebars higher or lower? I'm not at all mechanical so I can't work out which would be better. Hope your knees feel better following the physio.

Everyone's fund raising ideas sound fantastic. I like your idea of a curry night Suzanne. Will you be cooking the food?  I am having a quiz night in our village pub at the end of November but haven't organised anything else  yet apart from emailing just about everyone I know. I am amazed at how generous people are being especially some that  are only acquaintances through work  I actually had one donation from someone  whose name I don't recognise at all! She hasn't left her email address for updates so I haven't a clue where she comes from or how she heard about me.

Keep up the good work girls!

Ann

Ann, the curry night is at a local restaurant, I went to speak with them ( I have no real connection with them, other than occassionally going there myself)  and told them about the ride and charity and they were dead keen to help. They are providing the food, starters 3 different curries and rice and naan for £7 per head , it seems if yoiu pick a quiet night for them , ie. a monday, they will be happy cos it gets people in and they will make on the bar. I actually chose a Friday, but am holding it early ie. 7pm which I guess is quiet time for them and the late night crowd won't arrive til we have gone. I have 50 people already signed up to come, I will then ask for donations for the food of at least £10 per head, and we are having , a raffle, bingo , and i am asking for donations of good stuff from individuals and businesses for prizes and may also auction some things off too. Hopefully it will make a fair bit!

Hi Ann,

My husband raised the handlebars a little bit and then twisted the bar to push the handlebars away from me a bit, not by a massive amount, but enough to make a difference....difficult to explain, but if you can't work it out I am sure a local bike shop would be able to advise you.

Stumpy and Lezza -Thanks for the advise regarding the supplements.

Sarah

Hi Everyone

It seems everyone is doing really well with the fund raising.  I started off really slow then a freind suggested collecting copper coins from local neighbours.  I didn't think that it would raise much but  I have £169 and theres still more coming in.  The local post office has offered to change all the coins for me, then all I have to do is bank it.  I have also got a curry night and promise auction organised.  Sarah great idea for the handle bars. Wishing you all the very best hope to speak soon Carry on the good work .

Hi  I signed up in July - cycled the Nile in 2005 - it was such a great experience that I can't wait to get to India.  Lot's of cycling need to train and don't forget plently of hills ! I must admit I haven't cycled much this year so need that incentive to get on the bike.  Looking for some new and different fund raising ideas so if anyone has anything they can suggest !! Last time I found little and often raised the most - raffles, tombola's etc here and there - also joining in local fund raising can help ie shared fund raising with a local cause.  There are 2 of us up here near St Andrews but is there anyone else in Scotland.

Sarah

Thanks for the tip about the handlebars - it worked really well. The shoulder blades are now fine

I don't know enough about bikes to advise you. Mine is a Raleigh hybrid and it seems OK. The important thing is to get yourself the biggest and best sprung gel saddle that you can and take it with you when you go!   Also get some padded shorts/pants. My doctor did one of these rides in Jordan and she said that the gel saddle and the gel inners were asolutely essential  and to make sure I took my own with me Otherwise she said it will be like 'going out in new shoes'.  I do know that once I bought a new saddle and invested in some proper cycling shorts the comfort factor improved no end. I hope this helps.

Ann

Hi, I have signed up for the extra event, and kind of dreading all the training.  Have been doing quite a bit of swimming and walking lately and some work on the exercycle.

Why has everyone signed up?  Any reasons?

I signed up to lose weight and get fit.  It is the ultimate motivation, as I have been really slack about it in the past.

Looking forward to keeping in contact with everyone

Angela

Embarrassed [:$]Hello, hello yet another mad women who is going on 11 October. My name is Suzanne and I see that I am not the only Suzanne going. I live in Ramsgate, Kent. Is there anyone else from my way? Have just started fund raising. Sent a text to all my friends telling them about the Justgiving website and asked them to give generously and pass the text on to their friends. Fingers crossed. Also planning a do at a restaurant, and we have a friendly local cinema who will let me put on a film to raise funds. It is all soooo exciting and terrifying at the same time. Like most of you I had not been on a bike for 20 years and when I did get on it, it was very scary. Have had a couple of weeks break as been under the weather, but have joined the local gym and am beginning to wonder where I will fit my work and home life into the amazing challenge. Look forward to hearing from you all. Wink [;)]

Hi, just read that you cycled the Nile in 2005, I have signed up and will be doing it in 2007, you are the first person that I have found that has done it and I am after some advice on training etc.  Sounds such a good experience but wonder what I have let myself in for.  Did you find that you had prepared yourself enough to be able to enjoy at least some of it.  You probably think I am going on but were there many hills, and did you go to any spin classes. Many thanks, Sandra   Confused [*-)]

Hi SuzanneM I am susanne no Z! I am doing ok with fundraising up to £900 so far and have a curry night this friday so hope to do quite well then. However on the training front, not so brilliant , I am struggling to fit it in amongst work, home and the fundraising, i hope to get all the money in by summer so that I can really concentrate on training, I have a long way to go to fitness, this will be the biggest challenge for me, I have lost a stone and a half so far though, but need to loose another 2 really!  Can't wait to meet everyone, I think we should do this early next year I believe. Also someone who is doing it this year, in fact this week, told me that a training weekend is organised before the actual cycle ride in the cotswolds, which should be good.

Hi to everyone signed up for India 2007.  I cycled Egypt in 2005 so if you want info just ask.  How's the fund raising going - it's harder the second time round - but the training is easier !! Just make sure I go to the gym at least twice a week at the moment.  That will do until the weather warms up again!  Planning to cycle the Coast to Coast next July with friends I met in Egypt and my daughter who's 15.  Also as most of training weekends are in the south of England  Ithought it would be nice to try to organise one either in Southern Scotland or Northern Enland - Lake District area has some good routes.   There are 2 of us here in St Andrews, Scotland and it's a bit far for the training weekends. But it is good to meet up with who you are going away with. I will speak to Ann at Action for Charity and see if that's ok - Anyone interested in joining us.  On a last note send out some letters with your christmas cards asking for donations from all your family & friends - I got over £500 last year doing that! and on top of that 4 members of my family also held fund raising events for me and raised another £500 between them so it's worth doing.

Joy
