Had trouble getting onto the message boards yesterday for some reason.

Have had our local paper on to me today wanting to do a piece on what I am doing - but they are much more interested in the fact that I am on TV than the fact I am doing the ride! Oh well, it can't hurt I suppose.

My fund raising v slow so far, although I have not tried very hard and have a lot more people to get hold of. I thought I would get my mum to help organise a bridge drive - she did one for my sister last year and raised a fair amount. Other than that I dunno what I will do! We will see!

Weather shouldn't be too bad this weekend -bit hot in the South tomorrow, but watch out for huge amounts of rain perhaps early next week - I'll keep you posted! I reckon we will get summer in the Autumn this year!!!

Anyway, speak soon

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Your on the telly? hey make the most of it, one of the tv people in our area went on a trek for Acorns childrens hospital, ( they raise funds for life limited children) and they put the trek on the telly she got no end of donations from the viewers, ah forget that i said they televised it, when we meet I'm sure that Angie and I can explain that one! if you need ideas for fund raising, what about any local fetes, hold a stall theres loads that you can do, they are usually held in may/june time, quiz nights, halloween party, easter egg hamper raffle , easter egg hunt for the kids, fund raising disco, approach local companies through people that work there if you know any of them and ask who to contact re sponsorship, you usually find that they will put your case for you if they know you and my alltime favourite car boot sales, contact everyone that you know asking if they are getting rid of anything to let you know. You'll be amazed!!! My house is like a junk shop at the moment, all of my friends have been so generous. And how do you do a bridge drive?

Anything else you need to know. I've only stopped because i ran out of room and needed to take a breath.

Yeah I actually emailed just giving because I thought there was something wrong with my computer.

Love Donna

Hi

I have received my letter today with details of the Cycle Cuba 2008 and I am seriously considering it.

I am a bit worried about the fundraising, and also, I will be doing it alone, not with a friend etc so wondered if anyone in my area was going to do it

Thanks

Sue

ps I live in the West Dorset area

hey Angie,

At long last, you know we all got ours ages ago. Good luck mate, you won't need it though. What you going to do first?

Hi Sue,

The fund raising can be daunting if you think of it as one whole amount. If you plan events and have a rough target for each one it kind of makes it less frightening. As for doing it on your own you've, you won't be, there are 99 other ladies and you've introduced yourself to 4 of them. I live in Rugby in the Midlands.

Sarah,

The weather was fab for Alton towers.

Speak to you all later

Love Donna

Hi there

Welcome Sue from West Dorset, most of us don't know anyone personally doing this ride, I am near Southampton so not too far from you, as are a couple of the others, Bristol & Maidenhead if I recall rightly. I don't even really know many people in my area so fundraising felt very daunting, but thats all part of the challenge, and Donna is fantastic with the advice for it. But what an experience to succeed at it all... all so far are on the first of the 2 Cuba rides... good luck

My pack arrived yesterday too...

Sarah... reckon you will get loads being on tv too, will be able to raise the profile of it for you. My local paper did a piece which I got zero response, but then I am not known to anyone in the area really, so hardly surprising. Once you get your first fundraiser out the way and see the balance go up it feels great.

We all have just over a year after all to get to our target, which is way more than some.. we'll all do it

Hi also to Angie & Donna... I'm tired as worked last night again, so off for coffee and toast.. lol

Take care

Julz xxx

Hey everyone,
and welcome to Sue from West dorset, I would say go for it, its a great challenge to undertake, and you have now met us, so you will know people, we also get to meet up before we go. The fundraising like Donna said is ok, break it down into small goals and watch it grow, we are all here to help each other. It cant be that bad as Donna & I are dOing it all over again!!

Glad the weather was good for you yesterday Donna and hope you had a fun time.

Well I have started my fundraising planning off with a Christmas pud bakeathon!!, I make christmas puds and people always say they are good so thought I would do some this year for frends & family in return for a specified fundraising amount!! Enjoying the planning of that and have had a few takers already, then im going to arrange a carribean restaurant night ,
Will take up some of Donna tips as well, and see what else I can do.
Anyway
best wishes to you all,
speak soon
Angie

Hi Angie.. yes I had to cancel the old one and make a new one but just waiting for justgiving to free up the original url as I have t-shirts coming and cards made with the webpage on it. All will be back on with full details of who has sponsored me already included in the page. My total so far is £940.50 thanks to the curry night I did.
I will be approaching a carribean restaurant near me too but that one wont be till next year as got the fun day & quiz night to organise, plus hopefully a couple of small fundraisers at the girls schools.
But then the sooner the money side is over the better so can concentrate on the fitness.
Yes I have bookmarked everyones pages too.. lol
Thanks .. chat soon xxx

Just looked at your page - can't believe you fell off and broke your leg! What a bummer!

Yeah - I am on the TV - used to be a full time weather girl on the BBC (started on BBC South, then moved to national about 10 years ago) but since having 2nd child I have taken a day job of air, but still do a few shifts a month to keep my hand in. However, no-one knows who I am any more! Everyone knows Michael Fish, but no-one has ever heard of me. i dont know how much help it'll be - although it seems to be opening doors at least!

Weather fab today (as predicted of course!) so I have been out this morning - me with 2 year old on back of bike and my husband with 4 year old on tag along. Lovely way to spend a family morning together and Olivia is such a lump that I reckon it's fantastic training!

I have no idea how to organise a bridge drive yet - my mum is well into bridge and has loads of friends who are too. I am hoping she will know whyat to do!

I thought I might so some babysitting for donations (easy life sitting watching someone elses TV - and it pays well!), car boot planned for a couple of weeks time - ot's a good idea to get hold of friends' junk as well, and the local paper interview next week. So things should start moving soon.

Oh - I tried Halfords, big fat NO! Oh well.

It's great we are all southern England based - should make meeting up easier

lol sarah x

Angie.. .cards I will still use, keep some on me when out cycling, wearing the t-shirts.. lol  I paid for them, got them done through Vistaprint.. worked out at only £25 for 3 with uploaded logo and printing on both sides. Plus 25 free fridge magnets thrown in. Those I can give to friends and family.. all helps to spread the word. I did the cards up like the avatar to the left on here. I added in the WFW logo and then put the text in around it. They look good. I will still be able to use them all as justgiving are freeing up the webpage name so I will have the same one for the new page.

Sarah.. thats a shame Halfords your end said no.. try some more. Once local paper prints up your story and the fact you have been on TV, you can milk it for all its worth. I scanned mine and emailed it along with all information on the ride. Marks & Spencers sent me a £10 voucher I used as a raffle prize, Cura Health are giving me a free massage after the ride and donating £50. But Cycle World, BHS & John Lewis all said no.

I have stopped going to Esporta now as I just cant afford the £50 a month they charge.. Also wasn't impressed with the customer service in what is supposed to be an exclusive club! They did give me a discount I know on the back of doing this ride, but it is still expensive. The full price should be £75 I think! But I went to docs as overweight and got a referral to gym from them which gives me a contract free monthly membership for £25 a month including swimming which I love, so once my girls are back at school I will be down there every day pretty much.

Would be great to arrange a meet up in the Half Term holidays perhaps, by which time we'll have done a fair bit of training we hope. I do have lots of places to cycle round here but I am lacking the necessary motivation right now!

I have decided to arrange the big family fun day in May next year, as feel at this time of year people are fed up with the endless stream of charity collections. Plus I need time to arrange it all. So just going to do the small fundraisers at the girls schools, and a quiz night. Need to focus on the fitness side a bit.

Happy biking to you all, hope you are all having a great weekend.. we will get a list of contact details through at some point soon which will be good as very few actually come on here. Like you say though Sarah it is great that so far the ones that have are all South - SW of the country.

Ciao for now... Julz xx  Big Smile [:D]

Hi Sarah,

Was a bit of a bummer, but hey I fancied the rest! Angie held my hand and chatted to me for a bit until they carted me off to hospital.

Meant to ask before how did you sister get on, if its not to sore a question?

Oh, and for Julz and you if your interested, already let Angie know, on one of the threads a lady did a Tom Jones night, raised over a grand. Not sure if I could manage that with everything else but starts you thinking of other things to do though. Babysitting sounds good, only most of my friends have grown up kids now.

Try a local bike dealership they might be a bit more open making donations of stuff.

Julz,

I really like the sound of this cuban themed event. Is that what your planning for next may? Sounds like a good idea to do it then, people only just coming out of winter hibernation. You are a bit of a whizz on the computer aren't you, I figured out what you meant by avatar, buggered if I knew what it was before and how to do anything with it though.

Angie,

How much am I going to owe you for the pudding? need to save up for it now. when you mentioned alcohol I knew it was the right choice to order one.

What has happened to our newest lady? Sue, have you joined? Let us know.

Well I'm off to put my daughters glitter aftersun on, I got a bit burnt today even with loads of suncream.

Speak to you all soon

Love Donna
xx
