Reply Quote
We're thrilled that this Hints & Tips forum has become such a goldmine of useful advice and inspiration thanks to all your brilliant posts.

To accompany Justgiving's Hints & Tips for Fundraisers, we thought we'd have a trawl through your posts and compile a Top Ten Tips from Forum Users. And here they are...

Be brave!
Too many people get embarassed about asking - just don't be. If you don't ask you won't get. If they don't want to give, they just won't - it's okay!

Ask for donations instead of Christmas presents
My most lucrative method of raising money was to ask for donations in lieu of Christmas presents. All my family and friends thought this was a great idea because they didn't have to think of what to buy for me. Also, instead of buying them presents, they all agreed to let me put a donation towards my charity. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Put your supporters to work!
Don't just ask friends, relatives and associates to sponsor you ... ask them if they'll have a sponsor form too!  I tried this - and virtually everybody wanted to take one. I currently have 52 sponsor forms in circulation - all over the UK!

Your web address on your t-shirt
When I think about all the people out riding bikes on a nice sunny day, I think about all the missed opportunities to generate another sponsor. I thought about wearing a t-shirt with my JustGiving page URL on the back, mainly so that the people I could get chatting to at styles and water/cake stops have something to ask about, and hopefully remember me, and sponsor me.

Pack some bags
Try getting a few mates together and help people pack their bags in your local supermarket at the weekend, in return for doantions. This way you get to talk to loads of people and tell them what you are doing, tell them your web address as well and they might go home and have a look and decide to sponsor you. My friend raised about £150 doing this with 2 friends.

Get in the press
Good news, my local newspaper wants to publish a story about my fundraising event! At first I thought that they wouldn't be interested in my event but I thought I would drop them an email and tell them about it anyway. The next day I received a call from them wanting to know all about it. They were dead enthusiastic and are going to publish my website address and make a plea for donations for me. I would advise anyone who taking part in an event to get in touch with the local press. It might just be worth it!

Put your web address in your email signature
As well as having signatures on this forum, transfer them to your GMAIL/HOTMAIL/AOL account email as well. I have done this and many more people have followed the link.

Colour Day
Everyone in your school, college or workplace wears a designated colour for the day and donates £1 to take part. You end up with a big chunk of money for your charity and a very colourful school / office!

Put up a poster and go on the radio
I'm putting posters around my local area with my Justgiving URL on so people can visit it and sponsor me. I've just advertised my run on my local radio (107.9 Fosseway Radio) in an interview and mentioned my URL on there too for people to visit my webpage and sponsor me.

Get wrapping!

This Christmas I raised £60 wrapping people's Christmas Presents in return for a suitable donation to the charity of my choice. It was the first year I'd tried doing this and I only offered my wrapping service in the week before Christmas. This coming Christmas I intend to advertise it widely and run my service for the whole of December!

When you meet up with friends, family or colleagues and tell them about your fundraising event there is always the danger they will forget your url before they get round to making a donation. Why not go to one of those business card printing machines you often see in shopping areas and the like, and print off some business cards with details of your charity and your URL on. You can then hand these out to people so they have a reminder of your justgiving page and will be prompted to donate when they come across your business card later - good luck!

If you use your word-processor to print your envelopes, you can use the "return address" box to insert your charity name, event and URL.

These will then appear on all your envelopes and reach the parts e-mail messages can't reach.

i just did a sponsored Shark Dive (as you do) for Deafblind UK, and i was all techo-savvy about it. I registered on the internet pages, myspace and bebo as you can pop on a fundraising widget so people know what you ae doing and the widget clicks you directly into your justgiving page. I also printed out my justgiving page and posted it though all my neighbours doors - very effective as i raised my orginal target from £400 to £1000, and i have just passed that!

The smarties idea!!

I think this could really work. It seems like it has for other people.

I had no-idea where to get empty tubes from - so i phoned Nestlle (who make them). They were unable to help. My next port of call was EBAY!! what a site. I now have 11 tubes of smarties - with the sweets in heading my direction. They are the BIGGER tubes - 170g ONES. The bigger they are the more money can go in them. Ok the total cost was £25 for all 11 plus P+P. But work it out. Even if they only fit £20 in each tube - Thats £220. We can then RE-USE the tubes and get more money.

I am hoping to do the NY Marathon and this is the start of a very long fundraising road.
