Top tips for giving up smoking

james@justgiving 11-14-2006, 11:28

The Department of Health knows a bit about giving up smoking, so we thought we'd post its top tips to help you quit:

  1. Visit www.givingupsmoking.co.uk for more advice, or phone the NHS Smoking Helpline on 0800 169 0169, or visit your local NHS Stop Smoking Service.

  2. Make plans for coping with stressful situations

  3. Think positively – YOU can do it! Concentrate on the benefits

  4. Take it one day at a time. Congratulate yourself each day

  5. Ask a friend to stop too and give each other support

  6. Use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) or bupropion (Zyban) to help you manage the cravings – your GP will be able to give you advice about NRT and Zyban

  7. At first, avoid events where you may be tempted to smoke

  8. Keep busy and get a bit more active

  9. Count the money you save – spend it on yourself!

  10. Don’t try ‘just one’ cigarette – it always makes you start again

i got my appetite back when i gave up, so i made sure i had a good supply of raw carrots, celery, cucumber etc on hand so i'd eat healthy things and not chocolate!

i found if i ate something when i had a craving the craving would usually go.

so that's my tip - lots of healthy things to eat!

My concern is that the cigarette I crave the most is the one after eating - anything!

Chewing gum's the key Karen...get your mouth awash with mint and suddenly a snout doesn't seem quite so attractive. Mostly works!

Your page looks great. You can do it! Good luck...

Keep us posted,
James.

Hey James,

Well, I've quit ahead of schedule, at midnight, I will be entering smokefree day 10 and you know what? I didn't have to worry about the after food cig, it turned out to be the "one before bed" one in the end, but only for a few days.

I'm not being big-headed, but I think people can build up giving up so much that it seems almost impossible but it's been amazingly easy.

I have now got an endless supply of gum and sugar-free polos, as well as plenty of healthy nibbles.

well todays the day I have given up again!!
got the patch on, so fingers crossed. I have been trying for so long, but have promised all my smoking money to my justgiving sponsor page, so thats it. I cant afford to do both, and raising the sponsor ship is more important than fumigating my lungs!!
