Hi there, yes we like to keep things in the family! I am Susanne!
I signed up for the ride 15 months beforehand and aimed to complete my fundraising within 9 months which I hoped would then leave me with 6 months or so to train, but i managed to meet the target of £2800 within 6 months, so started to train after that, 8/9 months before the ride, up to that point I did not even have a bike. It worked for me, it was good to be able to solely concentrate on the fundraising and then the training. I was very unfit before I started to train I did no exercise or sport and was about 3 stone overweight, you will be surprised how quickly your fitness builds up, but I did go out at least once every weekend and about 3/4 times in the week after work, for most of those training months.
As for the fundraising I did a few events, a barn dance, auction and curry night, car boot sales, coffee mornings, raffles etc and asked for money for the fund instead of Xmas and birthday presents and it soon mounted up.
The best motivator for me was meeting up with ladies I had got to know through this forum, we arranged a number of weekends away training staying in youth hostels in various places, as we come from all over the country, in all I think we met up 6 times altogether, every 6 weeks or so, and without the motivation from each other I don't think i would have done it.
Good luck all of you!

Did you get most of your funds from the barn dance or curry night??????? I was thinking of doing something similar but was worried i'd end up out of pocket.

Sarah, I made about £500 profit on the Barn Dance, charged £10 a ticket inc a ploughman's supper I had to pay for the band and the room and the food, but it was hard work, I did the food myself and found it stressful trying to make sure I'd sold enough tickets to at least break even I wouldn't do another. The curry night was fantastic I made £948 in one night with only 50 people, and it was dead easy. I went to a local curry house and told them what I was doing, they closed off half the restraunt for me, set all the tables etc. they did me a set meal, selection of starters, bhajis, samosas etc 3 types of curry, naan and rice for £5 per head, I put envelopes on each table and asked people to put in the envelope what they thought the meal was worth suggesting £10, most people put this and some a bit more, so straight away £250 profit. I also asked everyone who came to bring something that could be auctioned or raffled, and they brought all sorts form boxes of chocs and bottles of wine, to a new kettle, perfume, watches and some promises, like a nights baby sitting, I also wrote to some local attractions like Alton Towers, cinema, football club etc. for tickets and auctioned them, and then we raffled some prizes too. It was a great night, even the restraunt gave me a meal for 4 to auction. I had a good friend with the gift of the gab who did the auction for me.

I also did a Barn dance to raise money for India. I made around £600. Was hard work and quite stressful to organise, but the plus side for me was that alot of people came who were complete strangers - just barn dance fanatics! So I wasn't solely relying on friends and family.
My best event was a garden party, that I organised in just a couple of weeks. I don't have a huge garden either! Did a tombola, cake stall, bbq, bric a brac, treaure map, throw ball into a bucket, a raffle etc. I was really lucky with the weather, and I made £738! Everyone had a fantastic time (about 80 people came through the course of the afternoon, I didn't know I knew as many people!) and many have said "When are you doing another?!".......
As Susanne said, and I have said previously, one of the best things we did was organising the get togethers through the forum. We all benefited from this immensely.

Hi Jane Louise
I am one of Susanne's Cycle India cycling buddies, I can endorse what she and Sarah E have said - it was the meeting up and training together every 6 weeks or so that really kept me going as well as all the chat on here. When we first met I was really struggling but those girls gave me the incentive and encouragement to keep going. I'm in my fifties and overweight. When we first met up in April 2007 I was wearing size 20 skirts - now I'm in size 16 - still not slim but much more toned and my overall fitness has improved no end. If I could get from where I was then to completing the ride on December 2nd then anyone can - provided they have enough determination.
I have agreed to be Donna's training buddy for the first Cuba ride. Donna lives at Rugby and I live near Chipping Norton which isn't too far away from you. Would you like to join us? We haven't set any dates yet but we had thought of doing a ride in the Banbury area. Sarah M said she would come up from the south to join us and I see that there are another two people on one of the threads who are Oxford way so maybe we have the nucleus of a traning group.
BTW I went for the padded shorts and gel saddle and I didn't suffer at all neither in training nor on the ride.
Take care
Ann x

Hi Sarah
I didn't have any particular date in mind, what do you (and others) think? Would love to do something.
Where does everyone live? I'm in Nottingham, anyone else near me?
My Mum in law phoned yesterday to say she'd seen a write up in the local paper about someone called Emma who's doing the Cuba 09 event, would be great if she got in touch, there was an email address so I've just sent her a note! I've told her about the forum.
Went to Decathalon today , bought myself a camelback, I know I won't need it yet but it was £44 down to £24 - can't resist a bargain!
