Hi Clare
I'm doing the Cuba 2009 ride too. I registered in November, when March 09 seemed an eternity away! Now it's NEXT year and I'm sure the time will fly by! Need to start proper training! The idea of the fundraising is daunting but quite exciting at the same time ( or perhaps there's something wrong with me!!!)
A friend of mine, Sarah E ( you'll see postings from her ) did the India ride in Nov, she really enjoyed it. She's said she will help with my training ( believe me , I need all the help I can get!) Sarah and some of her fellow India ladies met several times for rides in the peak district and the Cotswolds , if anyone is interested in doing one later in the year I could perhaps pinch their route!? Let me know!

Heather

Hi girls and warmest of welcomes to all newcomers.

As to mention of fitness levels being a problem. I was 20st 4.5 lbs before dieting. I have only lost 2st 4 lbs as put some on over xmas but I am back on it with a vengeance. I have no fitness level and worried myself sick as to whether I could do it or not . I have no worries now as I am determined to get levels of fitness as best as I can before Nov and I have spoken to others who have done something similar and now believe that anything is possible. Also will be 51 in Feb so everything stacked against me but hopefully I will be there!!
For fund raising for friends sons, agAIN TABLET MAKING SELLS TO EVERYONE AND i HAVE BEEN ASKED FOR LOADS MORE BUT NOT HAD TIME TO DO orders as yet but I will. Bingo ladies are great at buying it and if he could get some made and someone to flog it there he wiil make fair wee bit.
Also another great thing is to do a sheet of paper out with grids on it. I do 40 squares at 50p a square. Then it is affordable for everyone. You can pick any topic that you feel would be relevant for you i.e for 15 year old maybe football teams or significant dates of special eventI.e when did titanic sink etc as they go down well. You can also do sheets with 20 squares _ £1.00 shot £10.00 winner £10.00 to fund.
Raffles at events go well.
Baking stalls brilliant but you need the tablet!!
Well hopefully all will go well for us all.
Feeling very motivated but have not got of by backside so now trying to tie the motivation into actually moving!!
I have got the gear needed now but have not used it.
Any way New Year pocsitive thoughts and I am sure when each of us flags the rest will drag them up again. I wish I lived a wee bit nearer to train with you guys but not to be but invitation open until Easter weekend for anyone wanting to come to the beautiful Highlands of Scotland and stay with me and sample our fantastic bike trails through forests full of heather, ferns , red deer etc.
Just let me know!!

Well another wee not I intended to write and another manuscript I produced. Sorry as I have verbal diarohea as well. Life long condition I am afraid to say. Catch you all soon and good luck with all your planned ventures be it fund raising or training. Oh just been to Edinburgh for weekend to see Joseph. Very good but not as good as all the other musicals I have seen. Bye for now

Hello, I am Sarah - Heather's friend and training buddy.

I did the W4W Cycle India in November. I couldn't ride, didn't have a bike before signing up. I have had the most fantastic year and a bit, learning to ride, making new firends and ultimately doing the event irself. I highly recommend that you arrange a couple of get togethers aside from the official training weekend that A4C will arrange. A group of us, who met through the Justgiving forum met on several occassions, in different parts of the country. These wekends prooved invaluable, not just the bike riding, but the binding, sharing hints, tips, worries and concerns. On the event itself, we were there for each other to share happy times and also to provide support when feeling low. We all still made lots of new friends, but I think our liitle possee, will be firm friends for years to come. We are already arranging our next get together - yes, we are going to carry on cycling, its not put us off!!

So, get organising your first weeknd, or day away! The Peak District is good, we also went to the Cotswolds and to Rutland. The months will start ticking away I can assure you.

By the way Heather - when are we going out?!

Hi everyone

Hi Clare and Jude - welcome, great to hear from you.

Well i've not posted since before xmas and when i returned this morning......wow theres quite a few of us now......great stuff.

Well i went out yesterday on my bike for the first time. Been to halfords the day before and got a helmet and one of those mileage things ( god i sound proffessional) dear hubby fitted it for me saturday night so sunday morning 8.30 i was up and off. It was bloody cold and the roads had ice on them but i still went for it. I got to 4 miles and was thinking god i'm so unfit but 'No keep going i said' anyway when i got home I'd 10 miles i was really pleased - felt amazing after a shower and coffee, really pleased with myself.

Anyway, i'd love to get together heather - when you thinking?

Has anyone got one of these gel seats or just the norm?

oh happy new year everyone

Hi Sarah and Heather and everyone else doing Cuba 09

Great to find out some others doing the ride.Have been going to the gym and cycling before christmas and hubby bought me a turbo trainer so I can at least get legs

into a bit of shape again! I've got an old gel saddle I use but think i will update it as is about 15 yrs old! I'm worrying about fundraising just starting now .

I did Bath to Chobham bike ride (100miles in 1 day) in 2003 but that was before having my daughter so have got to get fit again!

Be great to know what sort of area others are in, I'm in North Wiltshire nr Bath.

Regards

Clare

Hi Sarah

I would go to a good bike shop and ask them what they recommend with saddles but I would have thought they are different for women

as we are anatomically different! (Still get sore bum with mine but not soo bad)

I think its very much down to personal preference.

There are ladies specific saddles. I have managed well with the saddle that came with my bike, but alot of the ladies who I became friends with through the India ride bought gel saddles. I found them too squishhy! My advise is lots of riding - your bum will soon get hardened up and used to it!!!! I am now at the stage where I don't always wear padded pants/shorts. A tip for you on the pant front - don't wear normal pants under your padded pants/shorts as it causes sores as the two layers rub together..

Its all very confusing isn't it? Just wear one lot of undergarment - be it your normal underwear or padded cycling shorts/briefs - not both! Then the unpadded overtrousers or 3/4's on top to cover your modesty.

Hey,

Yes I am... bit worried but should be fun!! Ive done no fundraising yet but started my training, well when I say started my training, I mean 4 miles.
My sister who leaves in Stoke is also doing it, but I live in Banbury. And could do with as much advice as possible.

Yes thats right Jane Louise and I are sisters and doing the ride together although we live in different parts of the country so unfortunately cant train together!!
I have got an awful cold at the moment so havent been able to get out - it is really frustrating!!
Susanne who gave the tip about padded shorts is our cousin and took part in Cycle India07!
