I work in Purfleet a couple of times a week, just down from the Circus Tavern!

Anyone started training yet?

Oh dear, the circus tavern.  That place should have closed down years ago.  I'm about 15 minutes from there, and 15 minutes from basildon. neither are places I'd recommend for a holiday!!  Theres quite a few places to ramble around tilbury though and with my mum's pub en route, it will be worth a stop I think!!

We got our trekking boots on Friday, damn expensive!! I wore them to walk to work this morning to break them in and they are killing me!  I work near Blackfriars in the City if anyone else works nearby?  Getting home late makes it awkward to do training but Mike and I are going to start at the weekend, just an hour or so to begin with and then build up length of time and how often we walk every couple of weeks (possibly dragging the dog along but not sure his little legs can handle it).  Has anyone else started training yet?

Kirsty

It seems like lots of us know the same places. I didn't realise the circus tavern was still open. I've also worked in Basildon and shortly before moving North I worked at Blackfriars as well - it's a small world!
As to the training - I've decided to start with a vengeance after Christmas (it will help work off all the excess weight I'm bound to put on!!!) I've tried taking the dog with me on one walk but I nearly ended up carrying him so I'm giving that a miss in future. My hubbie Rick would have loved to come training with me but unfortunately he's got cerbral palsy so he can't - so it looks like it's going to be on my own - Unless I can drag some other poor unsuspecting soul with me of course!

Hi,

I have just signed up in the past week.  I am doing the trek for endometriosis UK.  I am going on my own.  I am delighted to see so many others participating.

I am feeling completely overwhelmed by the amount of money one needs to raise.  As I have read through the string of replies, there are many great suggestions so thank you.  In one week I have raised £340 by simply sending out emails.

Does any one have a work out plan to get in shape?  I am completely open to suggestions.  Of course the freezing cold weather and the infamous holiday drinks aren't doing much for motivation right now.  I am based in London if anyone wants to start a weekly walking session.  I am also a member of Virgin Active gyms and would meet up at one of their locations too.

I saw someone bought shoes.  What type of shoes would you recommend?

Any suggestions for special clothing besides hiking gear?

Looking forward to hearing from everyone over the coming months.

Would anyone be interesting in attending an Olympic event the last day?

-Noreen

Hi Noreen!

The amount of money does seem daunting, and it wont be easy but there are so many different ideas out there on the net.  In feb, we have managed to get a village hall on discount and a free rock and roll singer to hold a big rock and roll dance, £7 per ticket, and were going to enter everyone into a raffle as well so we could make over a thousand out of that if we sell all our tickets! (anyone interested call 07756110462)

Mike & I are starting walking this weekend, we bought Hi-Tec walking boots from Trespass (outdoor sports shop) and apparently we need hiking sticks as well?  We're going to drive to a hilly place near me and do no less than an hour to see how we fair - i'm totally unfit though so I'm not sure i'll enjoy it!!

We aren't going to the Olympics I'm afraid, we both separatley backpacked in Thailand last year so we're hoping to stay on after the trek and travel around Beijing/surrounding areas for a few days, before coming back to work in the city!  Where are you in London?  I'm in Blackfriars.

Kirsty (& Mike)

We will be doing the trek in aid of breast cancer care in Apr 08. We have just moved to Grays....can you suggest any areas which are best to go walking around for training?

Thanks

Hi
It's great to hear from such a lot of people taking part in the Great Wall of China Trek for so many charities.
I bought my new walking boots today and joined the local gym so my training starts with earnest from now!
I don't suppose there's anyone from the North Yorkshire / Cleveland area that wants a walking companion at weekends is there?

Hi

Just thought I'd introduce the three of us. We've just signed up to do the trek about 10 days ago and have started fundraising...£120 so far so only about £7900 to go for the three of us!

We're three teachers (Hannah, Claire and Liz) living and working in Kuwait - possibly one fo the flatest countries I've ever been to, so training will have to be long flat walks and we'll pratcise hills in England in the summer before we go. I don't envy you all in the rain though, its winter here but not cold!

Hearing about places in Essex is making me smile and reminding me of home - I grew up in Colchester.

Good luck to everyone and see you on the wall.

Hannah

Hi newman1,

Where abouts are you in Grays?  The best/only place to go walking is Thorndon Country Park (about 15mins away, on the A128 from the Orsett Cock roundabout) or Langdon Hills, (20mins away, near Basildon.)  They are both really nice places to walk, especially if you have a dog.  I take mine there for some motivation, he wont let me walk too slow!

Hey!! Fundraising is slow at the mo :( I've just moved to Norfolk so have had loads of stuff to do like finding a job :( hopefully now thats all sorted I can get going again. Norfolk's pretty flat as well so not sure how I'm gonna work the training :) Raised quite a lot of money over xmas by putting sponsorship letters in all of mine and mum's xmas cards. Could try that over easter if people send easter cards. Also currently getting some prizes together for an on-going raffle. Though the licence to do this has cost me £40 and prob gonna cost bout the same to print off all the tickets. It best pay off :) How's everyone else's fundraising and training going? Jen xx

Hi
My fundraising has been going a lot better than I expected but like you is slowing down a bit now. I've got a tombola and collection in a local supermarket, coffee morning and a Duck Race planned so hopefully will progress more. Training is going pretty well - I go to the local gym and have joined rambling group that walk about 7-10 miles on Sundays on Yorkshire moors (some hills are a killer!). Hope to meet up with everyone at the Info Day in March.

A Duck race is where you have a large number of plastic ducks all numbered (in my case 200 ducks). You sell duck numbers for £1.00 each. Then on the set day you put all the ducks in a local beck / stream etc and the first duck to "swim" past the winning post wins the lucky number holder a prize. All you have to do then is catch all the ducks before they make a break for freedom! I had to approach my council about using the local beck but they were fine about it - I just had to sign a disclaimer and I have a source for borrowing the ducks for a nominal fee. All being well I could raise about £150 upwards. As far as I can see the hardest part will be catching the ducks.............

My primary school always used to do a duck race. It was always really good fun! Think they stopped the ducks by setting up a big net across the stream to catch them all. I'm going to the info day :)
