Hi Angela

I am sure the weather will get better soon and we will all be able to get out a bit more. I have just rejoined the gym at work and they are going to put me a training programme together, so I shall look forward to that...NOT...I hate the gym!

Jane and I have our first event on Saturday and we are really excited and nervous. The local pub is doing curry and chilli and Motown music. We have a small quiz, a raffle and are going to use an idea that Aly posted a while back, rolling £1 coins at a bottle of whiskey (but we are using Vodka as more of our mates like that). We hope to make about £500 so that will be a great start to our target.

We are also running a raffle at work where one of the managers will come in on his day off and work a shift in fancy dress for the person that wins- so they get a paid day off. There are 1200 employees so we are hoping to make a killing at £1 a ticket.

Good luck everyone else with your fundraising and training.

Hi Lesley

I did both training days in the Cotswolds when training for India. Found them very useful.....kind of gives you an idea where you are with the training - about right, or needing to do more. It was also good to meet others doing the event and put names to faces....then its less daunting when you arrive at Heathrow!

I stayed at a lovely farmhouse b&b at Upper Quinton, called Clopton Orchard Farmhouse

 www.cloptonorchardfarm.co.uk

Very reasonable, clean and great home cooked breakfast. Alison, the lady who owns it is ovely and very accommodating.

It was a 5minute cycle ride from there to the start of the ride at Vicarage Farm in Lower Quinton.

Hi Sarah

Thanks for your advice.

I have just sent off my form for both days in Oct. So it will be a good goal to train towards. I found a B& B called Winton house in upper Quinton which sounds alot like the one you stayed in. I booked it before I read your post so am hoping it is as nice as yours sounds, although I think any bath and bed will feel like a palace after 40 miles!

Hi Jude

Me and Jane have signed up for the 2 days so like you are hoping we will cope with it by then. I cant make it to london. Too busy working and fundraising! I look forward to seeing you in Oct though, hopefully we can arrange some training way before then? A friend of a friend does the Llangollen challenge every year and trains around Buxton and Ashbourne. I am up to12 miles in just over an hour (which when I have done it I think it is fab but then I look at 57 per day in Cuba and try not to panic!) and am working on increasing it gradually. It is very hilly just out my front door and is hopefully preparing me well for cuba??!! My aim is that by end of May I will be cycling to work and back a couple of days a week, which is about 13 miles each way from Cheadle to Stoke.

Regards

Lesley

Does anyone have any advice for someone who is not very good in the heat. I really want to do this but perhaps i should do Husky sledding instead as I am not a hot climate person.

Hi

All I can say is Cuba is very hot! I went on holiday in July last year and it averaged 35 degrees and was very very humid.I love the sun and will sunbathe all day (very bad I know!) but some days it was just too hot for even me. Looking at the weather charts it doesnt look much cooler than this in March, just wetter! and boy when it rains in Cuba it rains! great big fat rain that bounces up and creates massive puddles then disappears in an hour in the hot sun. Having said all this it is a beautiful facinating country and I cant wait to go back and see some more of it. But seriously if you dont like heat.....mmmm

Hi Ras
Welcome to the forum. If you have a look there is another thread for the Cuba 09 girls that we have started talking on. It is great to see lots of others joining now. Makes it much more real! Help!

Hi Lesley,

I have just seen your post that you are staying at Winton House - I have also booked a room there.  Folliowing the brilliant information day yesterday, I met a really nice lady called Catherine from south wales and I think we might share - it will be good to have understanding fellow guests.  Are you coming on your own.  I only found out about the forum yesterday so its all new to me.

It was great to hear from you. I'am 35 old years Quality Engineer from Peterborough. I dont know anyone from this area doing the event so i guest it is only me.I am sure that it will be great as i can not wait. Have you done this before? I have started my training in the gym and cycling at the weekends and managed to raise £310 in two days. Good start :)

Hi everyone
Sorry I havnt been on this thread for a while. Everyone has started talking on the other Cuba 09 one.

Ras
I have never done anything like this before and am doing it with my work friend Jane. I am an Occupational Health nurse and Jane is a team manager. You sound like you are well on the way with your fundraising so good luck and keep it up girl! Jane and I have raised about £1800 between us and have just sent off the forms for our employer to match up to £500 each so fingers crossed.

Sally
It will be lovely to meet with you in october and great that some fellow riders will be staying at the same place.

I know we are all in different parts of the country but it would be great to organise some training and meet up a few times before Cuba.
