Race Nights

Hiya
Just thought i would let you know about charity race nights, they raise quite a bit of money.
I managed to get prizes free for the winning owners. and my takings were:
Based on 8 races with 8 horses in each race
Race sponsors @ £30 each for 8 races = £240 (i managed to get local businesses to sponsor the races)
Horse ownership @ £3 per horse for 64 horses = £192
Entrance ticket fee of £3.50 and had 100 people turn up = £350
Sale of tote tickets on the night made £800
Raffle raised £100
I then had to pay £250 for the pie and peas supper on the night and £400 out in betting wins. i had a friend run the night for me for free, but it cost around £70 to hire the videos etc. I also manged to get the venue for free.
I raised a total of £1032 in the space of 4 hours, and everyone had a great time.
I am hoping to organise another one soon
Hope this helps with a fundraising idea.

Hi Julie,
This sounds like a great night - well done for raising so much.
Do you mind if I ask a couple of questions? Did you have to have a special license for the venue as gambling was involved? And did you provide a bar, or did the venue already have one?
This is something I am strongly considering doing, and I have access to a free venue so it might just work!
Thanks,
Julia

No I didnt have a special licence, as far as know we didnt need one, The venue was a local football club so a bar was provided by them.
Are you planning on buying the race tapes, the ones that we were given were all sealed with plastic, then after all bets had been taken, a member of the audience picked a tape. this was to stop peaple saying the tapes had been seen all ready. A ggod place to look for some more infor would be www.racenight.me.uk, it has loads of details on.
Hope this helps, good luck with the fundraising.
Julie

Hi, we did a race night too and raised £1,200 with about 100 people, so were really pleased. We did the same as Julie but used a school hall and sold wine, beer, coke and J20's and made about £2-300 on that. We also supplied fish and chips but sold the tickets for £8 per person. We also sold owner, trainer and jockey at £2 each which meant we had to have more winner prizes but it was a total of £48 per race if we sold all of them. We used a company at a cost of £265, but as I am planning on doing another one soon, I will have a look at the racenight.me website.
Thanks

Hi those who have had such good race nights. Where did your punters come from - just friends and acquaintances (I am loathe to continually use the same people all the time) or did you advertise for "strangers"? I would be hard pushed to find 100 people as most of my friends and family are scattered all over the country.

Hi
We had alot of different people turn up at ours, we advertised in all the local shops, so alot of local people came, also friends and family, plus some of my dads old work colleagues turned up to show support. Also due to the fact it was held at a local club, the regulars who were there joined in as well.
Hope this helps

Thanks Julie - that is helpful! I work from home which is always a difficult one as far as getting wide audiences are concerned - but will advertise far and wide (once I get a venue!)

you dont need a license but you need there to be another attraction, not just the betting, for example food is brilliant.
i'm planning at doing mine at the local pub so there will be the locals in, aswell as the people just there for the race night.
do you think i need at least a 100 people?

We just had a race night - in total about £2000 profit.
Same as Julie get companies to sponsor the race - sell each horse for £5 - prize a couple of bottles of donated wine. Find a free local venue - usually they make money from the bar.
Other replies are correct - you do not need a gaming licence - it is not betting - just raffle tickets for 1 of 8 lucky numbers. Legally you do need to offer something else to punters buffet/disco/raffle/stand-up-bingo etc.
Used a company here in Scotland called Entertainments Tonight at http://www.racenights.org.uk/
They were brilliant - very professional
People loved the night. That was our 4th race night for our charity.
Good Luck
