If you goto laterooms.com and put in anywhere in newcastle, gateshead, southshields etc its a nightmare.
Anywhere local to the north east is pretty poor, so we started to look outside the area.
Apparently people are sleeping on the seafront in tents.
A few years ago i was based in the area, so knew i could get the Metro from Sunderland area into Newcastle, then up too southshields.
I then had an idea, we then started to look at train times on the Sunday 20th into Newcastle.
We found that a train leaves Durham at 08:21 and takes 16min to get to Newcastle Central, a short walk to the start.
This train costs £7.10 return for an adult.
We then looked for hotels & b&B's within Durham.
We then went onto Yell.com and put in hotels, B&B's and made a list of places to ring. We then went through the list, and managed to find a pub that had rooms above it for £40 for a double for the Saturday night. Also, free parking too. As the roads outside the pub was Parking Mon-Sat 8am-6pm we could arrive after 6pm, and park until we returned late sunday evening.
Its about a 10min walk from Durham Centre to the train station, so ill take a £4 taxi.
So, in all its costing us £40 for the room, and 2x £7.10 for the train fares into Newcastle.
Other main-line stations are Darlington, which is about another 20mins south of durham on the train. No a big issue but it could mean getting up earlier than wanted.
Dont pay the hyped up prices. Live on the outskirts and avoid that tent city put up at sedgefield racecourse.
