Hello!
Just wondering if anyone is doing the Great Wall Trek with Charity Challenge next May? It would be good to swop some ideas and thoughts about training, fundraising, etc. Feeling a bit alone in my challenge!!
Thanks Tess x

Hi Rachael,
I'm going on the 9th with Charity Challenge, who are you doing the trek through? i'm raising money for The Samaritans, so far managed to raise £54 online, and £245 offline, but am struggling a bit as to how to keep going, especially when I set myself such a huge target!
How are you guys doing on the fundraising side? (Not even going to mention the training side, this is killing me!!!)
Tess

Hello there Tess,
I am also doing the Great Wall Trek in May but with Skyline Events. I also have a colleague who is doing it with me. We're raising money for the University College we work at in order to support students participating in volunteering in the UK and overseas.
I have a 12 week training plan that Skyline have provided as a basis and would be happy to share it if you would like.
What dates are you going?
Thanks
Veronica

hello all,
just wanted to say i completed the great wall challenge almost a year ago. i done it through charity challenge and it was an absolutely fantastic experience! i done about a 10th of the training i was supposed to and still managed to complete the full trek! although it was really hard.
the weather was a complete mix - its rained on our second day, all other days were BAKING hot. although you are quite high up, so it could get quite windy at times. i found i really needed the walking sticks for support. if you forget yours, there are people who sell them there. also, i think its a good idea to get the water pouch thingies. Most of the people who had water bottles found it quite annoying to constantly have to keep stopping and getting their bottles out.
Hmmm, what else....there are lots of people called wall catchers or 'hello hello' people. They offer to carry your bags whilst u trek for some money or sell you souveniers. They are completely harmless. Although they may seem a little intimidating and sometimes annoying, try to remember they are only trying to make a living. Our tour guides had been trekking for 12 years and never once had any issues with hello hello people stealing anything from your bags or causing trouble. I have to admit, there were a couple times that i snapped at a few of them, because they can be very persistent. And in baking heat, and crumbling tracks, the last thing you want is your face is someone trying to sell you postcards!
the only other thing i would recommend you get are - wet wipes (for toilet trips), anti-bac gel (so useful for everything), some savlon / antiseptic gel/spray for cuts and bruises.
think thats about it!
