Edinburgh Moonwalk 2009

Well i am doing my first ever marathon,i have never really been into fitness and in all honesty was a couch potato, after my dad died at the age of 57 with a heart attack i thought i better change my lifestyle else i would be going the same way ,and with 3 young children this isnt a route i wanted to go down,so i joined slimming world in august last year and have lost just over 3 and a half stones and still losing,i have got 2 more stones to go .At the same tome as joing the slimming group i decided to ditch the car and start to walk everywhere and with my sons school being a 2 and a half mile round trip its been quite easy to notch up the miles.
I am now training hard and am up to between 40-50 miles a week .
Are there any other people on here doing edinburgh this year ??
If anyone has any tips for me they would be gratefully received.

Welcome Goggins - and many congratulations on losing the weight. I lost 3 stone last year, and I entered Edinburgh Moonwalk last year and again this year. Last year in my fund-raising I set myself the challenge of not only completing the 26.2 miles but also losing the weight of my dog (34 lb) - the double challenge seemed to appeal to people and I ended up raising about £750.

I was lucky last year in that I already did quite a bit of hill walking, but I still had to train in order to walk that far on tarmac. Have you got your training manual yet from Moonwalk? What you want to do is to gradually build up the distance between now and June. See if you can add a couple of miles a week to your previous longest walk. And in between times, walk as fast as you can for 30+ minutes. The journey you make without sons to and from school should allow you to build up your fast walking.

Last year I walked with a group from the online Times Health Club - we were all losing weight and/or seeking a healthier lifestyle. We had never met before, but we got on very well and were able to give each other support during the walk. You can find us on http://www.timeshealth.co.uk/ - you have to register. Then look for "Moon and Sun Walks group" - the url once you signed in is http://www.timeshealth.co.uk/group-view.php?id=204

Good luck

Hello. Fantastic you have signed up to do the Edinburgh Moonwalk and congratulations on losing all that weight too! I'm doing the London Moonwalk, my second did my first last year, I can honestly say it was an amazing experience that I will never forget! I lost my mum to breast cancer in 2005 so this charity means so much to me. Good luck with the training and I hope you raise lots of money!

Best Wishes

Diane Clark.

Hi, i've just signed up to do the Edin Moonwalk too, following an internet "marathon walking schedule" & this week i'm supposed to cover 32 miles (a ten miler on Sunday!). I'm wondering how to fit it all in and I don't have 3 children at home so well done to you - keep it up.

hey congratulations on signing up for your first moonwalk, i'm doing my third edinburgh moonwalk this year along with some friends and family, it really is a fantastic experience and as long as you put in the training you'll be set, the whole lack of sleep thing got us the first time we done it, none of us really thought about that and that's quite hard but we keep coming back again and again and we love it!! good luck xxx

Hi im now doing my second moonwalk there are seven of us doing it together. we actually get up and do training on a saturday morning at 7 am sometimes earlier, we have been walking sometimes at night as well after 8. I have three young kids and find these times suit me. every second weekend we are walking on a sunday in edinburgh at the moment we are at 18 miles but going to keep adding a mile each time we go in. we followed the plan to the letter last year and decided that it wasnt enough training. Sleep deprivation didnt bother us but eating cereal bars, yuck, even now i cannot eat them, going to take lots of dextrose sweeties and lots of tablet with us this time, last time we drank 4 bottles of water, bad idea toilet stops galore,, so i will be cutting that as well... good luck to everyone doing it xxx
