Ideas for Raising Money - Opinions Welcome!

Hey,
I had a couple of ideas and wanted to know what people thought...
Fancy Dress Pub Crawl -
Contact a bunch of pubs in the local area and get a bunch of friends together and go round in fancy dress to try and raise some cash! Charge everyone a small amount to come on the pub crawl, and take buckets with us for people to chuck change in!
The only thing I was wondering here - as long as we have the pubs permission - would we also need a license to collect money?

I have heard of uni ragweeks doing this and it sounds fun! Get a bunch of friends together in one area (possibly in fancy dress too) and they have to get as far away as possible! Get everyone to wear something which has my donation page URL on it, and also business cards etc.
The catch is - they aren't allowed to pay for the transport - it all has to be begged and blagged (no illegal activities of course!).
I was thinking it could raise profile of the event and we may even get some donations as we go - however not to sure if we would need to get a license to do this as well?
Was thinking of seeing if I could contact companies to get prizes for people who get the furthest, most interesting etc etc?
What do people think? Anything you would change? Anything I haven't thought of?
All input is welcome as I won't be doing these events till probably August time i.e. when it's warmer and closer to my event!
