Sleeping Bags!  Discover Adventure recommended "Comfort Factor of Zero degrees". Prices go from £60-£70 and up and up and up!  Anyone got any suggestions or recommendations?

P.S.   Only 8 weeks to go!

hello ther. I would suggest a Rab Summit 600... but only if you got £250 to spare. Scope have advised us to get a comfort rating of -15, extream rating -30. though i understad you can buy liners for your bag to make it warmer.

I have just brough 2 bags second hand off of ebay. Though we not totally certian which of the Rab range they are, they seem to match the pics of the Summit 600.

try to go for a goose down sleeping bag, as they tend to be warmer and more comfortable, however, if they get wet, they pretty much usless till they dry out again. But since your all sleeping in tents, it shouldn't be anything you need to worry about.

On a side note, I have been popping into my local Millets stores to ask for advice on the gear i need. Anyone else found that they don't really know much about the stuff they are selling?

Hello,

I've gone for a Marmot Sawtooth -

http://www.planetfear.com/product_detail.asp?d_id=9&c_id=52&s_id=650&p_id=7707

I tried it out when we had some properly cold weather over the winter and it seemed pretty good. I've got a silk liner too just for an extra bit of warmth.  They were selling the sawtooth bags off cheap in the cotswold company a couple of weeks ago - when I say cheap I mean just over £100 which is still pretty expensive. But it seems a good bag.  Definitely best to go for a down bag and when you put it in the stuff sack, stuff it into a bin liner first just to make sure it doesn't get wet.

I notice you said 8 weeks to go - is nobody else on here going out on the 3rd - 12th May trip?

I was thinking of climbing Ben Nevis on the last weekend of April, weather permitting. Anyone want to join me?
I have a long weekend booked, so was thinking of driving up to Scotland Friday, get a B&B in Fort William and climb Saturday or Sunday morning, depending on the weather.
Let me know if you are interested. maybe I can block book a local b&b or something or we can meet at the visitor center at the foot of the hill.
Best Wishes

Hello,

Not the nicest of questions to ask, but it's only 2 weeks to the off and I want to get this cleared up.

I understand that when you need the loo on the trail there obviously aren't always toilets around and you will need to dig a hole (when a No 2 is needed). What do you do with the loo roll afterwards? Do you bury it? Burn it in the hole you've dug? If you put it in a bag to take with you will things not get smelly, especially in that heat?

Any ideas?

Eat it! Only joking - we've been told not to burn it or bury it and that we must dispose of it property at a camp site.  Yes, you'll have to take it with youIck! [+o(].  Buy some small resealable bags and use two i.e. double bag for safety!  Good luck with your trip and put some info on here when you get back - I don't go for another 5 weeks

Do you guys know about using surgical spirit to harden your feet for the trek?
My shoes are fairly comfortable but the soles of my feet have always been very sore after a long walk. A neighbour suggested I paint the soles with surgical spirit and I have been doing that regularly for a couple of weeks now. It really seems to make a big difference. Maybe you all know about that already and I'm the last to know, but if is a spectacularly good tip for those of you out there with similar issues.
28 days to go! Yikes!!
Best Wishes

John had same problem with soles of my feet until chiropodist advised me to use surgical spirit or Savlon before each walk....but a good foot cream at the end of each walk....seems to be working for me, but obviously Peru will test it to the limits!

As for the toilet paper issue (think I'm more nervous about the whole 'toilet' thing than I am about the actual trek) I have got some 'scented' nappy sacks about 50pence for a 100 from the baby dept in Boots....but hoping I won't have to 'go' for the whole 5 days :$

Hi All.

My local boots had a special offer on the factor 40 apply once sun screen this weekend.  It's on buy one get one free, which wors out pretty good for the trip I think.  If you have not got yours yet I would suggest you take a look.

Al.

P.S I am not looking forward to the toilet issue.  I will also be taking the andrex moist tissues, as you never know what might happen and it will help you keep that end of things clean on the trek.

Has anyone any thoughts or ideas about pen knives? The lonely planet guide suggests we take them (in checked luggage) but will we need them? What will we use them for? Do you guys take them with you when you are walking at the moment? I'd be interested what you all think. I don't know if I want to buy one if I don't need it and don't want to fall foul of UK knife carrying laws.
Best Wishes
