Hi Sarah
We've also signed up for this event - tried for Nov 08 but it was full so going for 09 instead which will hopefully give us more time to get our butts into gear!
Let us know how you're getting on with the planning

Hi Kat,
I signed up for India to cycle November 06. Hadn't been on my bike for about 30 yrs seriously. Had never done any consistant fund raising eg for a specific target within a time frame. Took me ages to decided to take the plunge, but once I did I planned everything, got in touch with all my friends and asked them to sponsor me, arranged events, all little ones spring fair, quiz nights, car boots (asked my friends to clear their lofts out to) that sort of thing. One friend arranged a line dancing night and that finished off my fund raising. Its really hard work and time consuming, but very rewarding especially if you believe that the charity is worthwhile. The cycling was the easiest part of it, find lots of 'undulations' just get out there and do it, my favourite time was before the kids and hubby got up, and on a Sunday morning for a couple of hours.
This time I've signed up for Cuba and have decided that alongside my little fund raisers I'll try for a biggie and have arranged a disco for next April. I'm so nervous!
Hope my bit helps, I know the other ladies have their own stories about how they decided and took the plunge
Donna xx

Hi everyone. Thanks so much for your replys.
Tracy and clare - great to know i'm not the only one on the march 09. where are you in the country?
Sarah e - Wow just read your other post sounds like it was brilliant, well done. Yeah please do tell heather about us here on March 09, would be great to chat to other people, make friends before we go - share our experiences. I actually have your web page saved on my favorites for inspiration to help me believe i can do it (found it a week ago before you left for india)
Kat - All i can say is i applied last week. I know no one going, I'm 30 with 3 children (5, 2 and 10 weeks) and a hubby to look after, I've never done any fundraising before but have asked for the support from my family which they are giving me and i've not ridden a bike seriously since i was about 14. I've not started raising any money yet, am waiting till after xmas now. I want to do this as a personally challenge, to get fit and give something back ( i really do believe in this charity).
So i'm going for it........Hope this helps knowing my situation.

Thanks so much for your encouragement guys!! It's really good to know that it's possible to do even with no experience. Well, I called up today and I'm getting my pack tomorrow so I think I will go for it. Sarah, that's really impressive!! i can't believe you have all that motivation with 3 little ones.
Donna- thank you for your comments becuase I think your right. I'm hoping that with a lot of planning and breaking it down to small bite size chunks I might just manage.
I've always wanted to do something for a good cause but I think i've always been a bit of a chicken but this forum seems like a great place to start with a team building spirit!
Thanks again. I'll let you know when I've registered and plans from then on
Kat x :)

Hi All
I'm Heather, the friend that Sarah E is talking about!
I'm doing the Cycle Cuba in March 09 and I'm really excited about it, I'm boring my husband and kids to death already!
I been inspired by Sarah doing the India ride, she's done fantastically well, not just the bike ride itself but the fundraising too.
Has everyone started their fundraising then?
Heather

morning everyone.............
Well done kat - let us know when your in!!!!!! Well thats five of us, wonder how full the third event is.
Heather, nice to meet you. At least you'll have sarah around to give you support and advice, when you need it.
Don't know about you lot but reading the other posts re: india - i feel like i need to keep writing everything down (the advice i mean). Although i suppose we can ask event one and two when they get back. Has anyone asked A4C about the training weekends - when and where they are?
I've put out a few feelers re events.....my eldests school fete in july (having a stall) my mum works at one of the large airbases in the area so hopefully having stall there too on their family open days. My brother-in -law works for citreon so his asking them if they will sponsor me if i have their logo printed on my tops and then put a story in the papers. Do we have to tell A4C about all events we do.
Anyway must go.......have all 3 kids at home today with colds......mmmmmmmm horrid noses......lovely.

Hi Sarah,
Get to know a journo at your local paper and they become very helpful. Find local businesses and write to them all, most wont even respond but if you don't ask you dont get. Use smaller local businesses to help with raffle prizes and so on. restaurants, hairdresers, gyms, etc... But as I said in the other post, plan ahead and don't leave it too late (but let folks get over christmas first!) and avoid summer hols as there are too many people away.
I got a file together (this is Mrs Mega Disorganised talking here!) and I've logged everyone I wrote to and responses, all contributors of ANY kind. All monies in and date of payments sent, though you should get regular statement from A4C. If you need any ideas you could always set up a specific thread and we could give the ideas that have been successful for us.
Take your training steady at first but from what I can gather it is essential!! I have kept a log of what i've done and many like me have invested in a computer odometer. It can be such a buzz when you look back and see the progress you have made written down in black and white
My plan is to get as fit as I can get so it is more of an experience than an endurance challenge. I have had some plateau moments (just had one recently infact) but relax and stick at it and you'll come out the other end all the stronger. I still don't know if I've done enough but the theory is to just keep at it and start getting the longer miles in now we are on the final countdown. I can't believe where this year has gone. There may well be low points and I've had my fair share of those but there is always someone around to give words of encouragement. When it comes your turn to do any of the group training you will be amazed at how many other mad women (of all ages) there are there doing just what your doing.

Hi Kat,
My name is Alyson and I am doing the first cycle Cuba 08. I am very overweight and totaly unfit and if I think I can manage it (after training ) anyone can!! I am also a granny and fifty!!
I was in Cuba over last 2 weeks and wow what a fantastic place to cycle in. I met a group with another charity cycling Cuba on their first day.
Please do not panic about the fund raising.
I have had race night, Sold tablet and got donations on just giving page and I have raised £800.00 ./ Again if I ccan anypne can. If I can be of any help in any way please just ask. Welcome to the blethers that pass on here but good for info and making friends with folks doing the same as yourself. Noone has anything to prove as we are all in the same boat only some are fitter than others. I felt like you initially but now I feel I could cycle the world. NOT!! But I hopefullly will when I get back. I can no tjoin ttraining weekends as I come from the Highlands of scotland and distance and time constraints too much. Keep focused and you will get on fine. Cheery for now.
Aly
